Comments (6)Carlie, we grow attached to plants started from seed, they have more meaning...I feel the same about baby cuttings. I have two heated trays filled with various seeds, some sprouted, others can take as long as a year to germinate, especially a fan Palm. Those in the trays are: Adeniums, Speckled Geranium, Decaryi, Pachypodium, Dorstenias, Velvet Musa Banana and a friend sent Bird of Paradise seeds. Don't know if Birds will make it; they tend to rot. 2 Avocados, and Mango,..no luck with the mango. Can't figure how to remove outer shell from inner seed. My Clivia was started from seed in 1982/3. Also a Pachypodium (Madagascar Palm Cactus) started in 2006. 2 Avo from pits, both about 12" tall. In the past I sowed store-bought lemons..they grew tall and compact, but thorny. Gave the lemon to a friend. A variegated, trailing African Violet lived a few years, then died.. Ficus Religiosa and Passionvine..Both plants were placed in our green house..the heater went out on the coldest night of winter..both froze. The passionvine was 13+ yrs, Ficus 5 yrs. boohoo. I'd really like the mango to sprout..Anyone have any ideas how to remove shell? The seed is in water, but the water, which is changed daily, is funky. What to do? Erict...Are the plants you posted sowed from seeds? They're really something..You have a super green thumb. How on earth did you detach mango from shell? lol. To be honest, other than mango and monstera, I never heard of your other plants..lol. Are they all edibles? What is the seed in pic 8? Potted in a 4" clay pot. Erict, no, you're not a nut..growing plants is a wonderful hobby. Relaxing. When a seed germinates, a cutting roots, or a plant flowers, we feel good. Years ago, a friend gave me a plant book called 'Starting from Scratch.' The author lists all types of edibles, how to, well, start from scratch. Some seeds, like citrus, (depending on time of year) need to be refrigerated 1-3 months before sowing. One day I'm going to try apple seeds. I think they need to be chilled first, but make pretty plants. First two pics are Clivia, started from Park's Seed in 1982/3..Third pic is Pachypodium, don't know which species, sown in 2006. Toni...See MoreSome Michigan grown cacti & succulents
Comments (5)I forgot to grab pictures of a lot of stuff, to be honest - was enjoying myself too much just looking at names and such and thinking of possibilities. I couldn't believe I forgot to take a picture of their big jade. Will probably go back in a month or so, when more stuff is blooming outdoors (only the magnolias had started to light up right now), and the bonsai are back out on display. It's a shorter drive than I expected from me - only about a half hour....See MoreCacti/Succulent grown OUTDOOR conditions UK
Comments (8)The typical succulents we grow indoors are not hardy enough, but there are quite a few sedums that should survive, just like Gill's. With wet winters, gritty soil will be even more important. Can you grow sempervivums? Hardy opuntias? And many trailing/ground-cover type sedums, and taller ones that will grow about 2' - now called telephium or hylotelephium. They are definitely hardy enough for your temps (I grow them and it gets much colder than -20*C). Many are in containers. And there are few euphorbias that will overwinter, some will not but they will reseed and grow every year. All of the above are in containers but will grow as well (if not better :) in ground....See Moreericmd01
