18h.p.onan what shaft to use
Comments (1)The tapered pto end was designed for a generator/welder application. A long bolt through the centre of the rotor kept things together. With the generator coupled to the flywheel side, it will rotate in the opposite to normal rotation. Onan had stub shafts for use in tractors but they will likely be scarce now....See MoreNo start condition, P218 Onan
Comments (18)Gentlemen.....Problem solved. I jumped from the bat terminal on the solenoid to the switched terminal on the solenoid and got a very light "spark". Nothing...no activity at all from inside the solenoid. So then I jumped directly from the battery to the battery terminal on the solenoid to eliminate the possibility of that cable being bad. Nothing. Then directly from the battery to the battery terminal on the solenoid to eliminate that possibility of THAT wire and the/or the switch being bad....nothing. Then directly form the battery to the starter terminal on the solenoid which should have spun the starter...nothing. So I got to thinking what are the chances of BOTH the solenoid AND the starter going bad at the same time? Possible I suppose, but unlikely. Then since I was I was on a roll I furrowed my eyebrows and though a little harder.....12.4v. Hmmmm. On a fully charged batter under no load it's usually closer to 12.8 - 13v. Bad cell? Brought the truck up and jumped it and it started imeaditatly. I am assuming that the bad cell just didn't manifest itself completely until there was a load applied. Further though on my part (this is starting to hurt) and I realized the battery is about 4 years old and under this type of service, that is a perfectly reasonable lifetime. So, a new battery and I'll be set. Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it!! Chris...See MoreOnan ignition parts?
Comments (2)You might want to track down the Onan ignition diagnostic tests first. There is a way to check the system with a test light I believe. That trigger on the flywheel is very hard to get to and I'd hate for you to replace it an that not solve your problem. But...that is what the problem sounds like. When they start to go bad, they will work cold but not hot....See MoreRemoving the flywheel from a P218 Onan
Comments (6)I have a Miller Legend portable generator/welder. This engine failed to start (cranks OK) So, a new fuel pump hoses along with an inspection of the carburator, plugs and hoses. It only pops with fuel in carb. Timimg seems to be far advanced as it stalls the starter wnenever it pops during engagement. So, I found that the flywheel has two threads holes near the center to mount the puller. So, 1st thing to do is to loosen up the center flywheel mount bolt approx 1/2". No need to remove yet as you'l need the center threaded portion of the puller to push on the bolt head after you start to tighten down the puller center extractor. Remember, do not remove the bolt, or you have to fill the center hole in the crankshaft with something for the puller screw to push on. No hammer amd wood block, or pry bar is needed for this job. You might use heat from a propane or map gas torch to swell the flywheel some. But unless the weather is cold it should seperate nicely. CJ...See Moressewalk1
