Help with my phlox please

Here is a photo of my pink phlox as of today, very late blooming as you can see. I am not even sure if it will continue to open up. I transferred it from my daughters garden last fall.

about 6 feet to its left is my white phlox which is doing fabulous, if anything too tall and big .

both are in same conditions. The leave are a little funny on the pink one do you think it is diseased.

Looks to be a virus of some sort. A number of them can stunt growth and disfigure leaves like that.

I have the same problem with phlox. Look on the plants and see if you see tiny (or small) orange and black bugs. Phlox bugs. They suck the chlorophyll out and often it kills the plants. I got some insecticidal soap...I read if you spray often, then in the fall cut the plants way back and throw away the cuttings, hopefully it's better next year. Good luck. Renee'

mine just came out of a snow bank.. watch the answers of those warm zone peeps ... as to timing ... regardless .. i NEVER prune mine back.. new green leaves.. cover the old uglies ... i suppose you clean your house too???? ... lol .. BTW.. i agree ... with rather early blooming things.. default to after flower ... unless you dont mind missing the show .... ken

Hi Jacob, I actually water in the evening only once the sun is starting to go down...and I avoid the leaves (especially the tops) of the entire garden bed. We had a pretty intense storm the day before I took the original photos...it rained about 2 inches in 1 hour. Soil has been nice and wet since and I haven't needed to water....but I was checking on the drainage and making sure the plants weren't damaged when I noticed the phlox started to look like it was. I had originally thought they were getting burned up by the sun a few days after I planted them but it went away and then came back about 2 weeks later... I'm still thinking the phlox was in shock mode...they seem to be doing okay after I pruned yesterday. I plan on updating with some photos tomorrow morning after today's batch of partly sunny and mixed in rain weather.

That looks like insect damage to me. Either earlier season aphids or possibly phlox bugs. I'd lean more towards aphids as they typically will cause that distortion and stunting on the newest growth yet it usually remains pretty green and healthy - just curled and distorted. Phlox bugs will typically show more stippling on the foliage so it looks unhealthy as well as stunted and distorted.

Should I cut it down now and destroy the leaves or should I discard the entire plant.

or should I cut it down in fall and hope next year is better.

No need to destroy it, it will come back just fine next year.

Just keep an eye on it next year for the little buggers and usually just a good spray with the hose will take care of them...or some wonderful ladybugs :)
