Honey bees are no angels
Comments (59)I could agree and believe the OP as soon as I read it. A search for honey bee damage brought me to this forum. Two years ago my neighbor decided to become a bee keeper, and appears to be as commercial as he can get away with. I had harvested my fig tree for 8 yearsm but last year, the figs were totally destroyed by his bees. Before they were at the stage that I would pick them, they would have bees feeding off of them. The state of Florida has recently turned bee keepers into royalty by overriding any local concordances, and letting them pretty much do as they please. I tried many things last year, as I did not want to kill them. Next I will complain to the department of agriculture who supposedly regulates them, but I have had enough, and this year the pesticide will come out. If anyone knows of any groups that one could join to complain in Florida, or who wants to start one, please post up....See MoreHeaven on Earth Rose
Comments (53)Heaven on Earth seems to be all over the map in color, form and health. I probably got mine from RU, so it started as an own root cutting. I love it even though it is quite floppy. It gets better every year and was almost all upright the season of 2020, with only one large cane flopping. The color is delicious and though not a strong fragrance, it is lovely. The blooms are huge. I would definitely buy it again. This isn't a typical bloom. It was the last bloom of the season and was struggling with freezing night temps. I'm posting it so you can see the color in cooler weather - quite orange and fewer petals. I like it best in warmer weather when it's the color of creamy peach ice cream. The beautiful photos posted above are what the blooms typically look like. Heaven on Earth, end of season, freezing nights....See MoreAngel trumpets ? in Ms.zone 8
Comments (14)Seven kills all insects, whether they're beneficial or destructive, but it won't kill mollusks, which is what slugs and snails are if I remember right--anyway they're not insects! Diatomacious earth is the skeletons of tiny sea creatures (diatoms) and cuts their skins so they dehydrate. It's so safe you can feed it to your dogs and cats for worms. I much prefer to use the safest possible method especially since I nearly killed myself with what was supposed to be a safe insecticide--di-Syston, advertised as a systemic. Turned out it had some systemic action but mostly killed by releasing a NERVE GAS. Believe me--you do not want to be subjected to a nerve gas! I probably put up with more insect damage than I should sometimes....See MoreHealth of peach swirl and rash shovel pruning
Comments (38)Lily, I have Peach Swirl bought from Edmund's this year. No blooms yet but she's very healthy. My Summer Romance and Earth Angel are both super healthy and covered in their second flush of buds. Both were bought from a nursery this spring and from what I can tell are own root. Are they fertilized with some kind of bloom booster? Could this be the reason? My own root EA and SR, planted in the same beds, are still tiny and have very disappointing bloom so far. Could age be the issue? Fire Opal has flowered once this year, last year she was hardly ever without bloom. Easy Elegance My Girl had one tiny flower, none since. Even my best performers are doing poorly. Windermere is barely growing but did have a nice spring flush. QOSweden is finally putting on some new growth. I've read she has slow repeat but she's so healthy and one of the few Austins that don't nod. Flowers that don't face-plant in the mud are a plus in my book. One Nahema has not flowered at all this year and suffered a lot of winter damage. The other one flowered once, beautiful blooms but very sparse production. Kordes Dark Desire, Fiji and South Africa don't do well for me. The weather has been very stressing this year though, we've had next to no rain and watering isn't helping much, the soil is so dry. None will be shovel pruned this year but they'll probably be replaced with more DA's. DA's seem to like my growing conditions the best. I just might not have enough sun for these other roses. sharon...See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
