My flower shopping spree
Comments (10)I would like to try going to Woodstock sometime. Not only to visit the lovely nurseries, but to snoop in Esh's garden! Yesterday Westender and I had a full day outting, hitting the Athens area nurseries, feed stores and finally the old timey seed swap. I must say, I filled her car. I hogged the very last Julia Child rose from Goodness Grows (but they are going to start more), found a gorgeous white roof iris (I have two blues, but this one is so purely lovely) to go with white scented spring phlox. Tons of herbs and succulents/sedums. What fun. The seed swap (which is not really a swap, but a give-away) yeilded some unusual bean varieties and heirloom tomatoes who's seeds are not yet available (you bet I will learn to save these tomato seeds!!). Some of those farmers and seed savers are really neat people and it sure was interesting to see that the seed saving is pretty much their whole life and interest. They are very dedicated to it. Westender was very kind to me yesterday, and I really appreciate everything she did, especially after I stole her map and forgot to give gasoline money! Westy, I owe ya! Comments (14)Karen, I love your treasures, esp, that cute pink bunny tureen. I wasn't aware that you had fibro too. I have suffered with it for years, many of which were undigainosed.I think i just spelled that wrong, but it's just brain fog. I once had one dr. tell me "you're back couldn't be hurting right there; the human body isn't built that way" Too bad we aren't built with the ability to transfer our pain to others. He would have found out pretty quickly just how the human body is built. My family was all here yesterday and I was anxious to get some of my dishes arranged(WE ate outside) and before we could get everything ready the men got hungery, and my son came in and said "Mom, I just told everybody to start eating, there was no use letting it get cold" Men around here just think about their stomachs.HA My fibro and my artheritis were both being uncorporative yesterday and I was just about ready to drop by the time the last left, and I haven't been to good today either--matbe I just need some "Retail therapy"-- just one problem, I don't have the motivation for even that today.Maybe tomorrow will be better. Love reading your posts Janet...See MoreFirst Day of Deer Season with Rifles - Do I Lay Low?
Comments (40)This is a great thread - although it seems to have strayed a little bit from the original question - there are still many interesting ideas and opinions being given. Personally, I don't deer hunt because I don't particulary like venison. In Wisconsin, where I live, the fall deer hunting season is about as close to being a religion as it is to being a sport. Rifle season typically runs from the Saturday before Thanksgiving to the Sunday following the holiday. Schools close the entire week because they realize that a good many (most?) of the students and a good many teachers have other ideas for that week and there is really no benefit to keeping the schools open at that time. I own 56 acres and I allow my neighbors to hunt on my land. I KNOW that my neighbors are safe hunters and that they are respectful of my property. Also, if they happen to shoot an animal on their own land, and not kill it immediately, I certainly want them to have the oportunity to track the wounded animal if it happens to lead them on to my property. Knowing that there is the potential for hunters to be on the "wooded back 40" anytime during the season means that I don't go into the woods without wearing orange. While I don't have a particular worry about our dogs or horses, I do keep them close to the house (dogs) or in smaller pasture (horses) during the rifle season. Ultimately, my family does not change our basic lifestyle to any great degree during hunting season. Although I understand your initial hesitation, fifidanon, I also think that you did the right thing by overcoming your concern and living your life. As other folks have already suggested, the car ride to the mall is MUCH more of a risk than is the potential stray bullet. As for deer roadkill, it is also legal here to recover a deer that has been hit by a car. Seems to me like a much better option than letting it lay on the side of the road to rot. Last year I hit two deer with my truck - in almost the same location - about 5 days apart. The first deer survived the impact, but it had a broken back and was in obvious pain, so I drove to a neighbor's house and brought him to the wounded deer where he finished it. We loaded it up and took it back to his house so he could butcher the carcass. The second deer was hit right on the head (I almost missed that one) and was killed outright. Again, I loaded it up in the truck and took it to the same neighbor so the meat could be used - rather than leaving it to rot and to be wasted. BTW, that particular neighbor works as a seasonal DNR warden so he took care of the "official" report on both accidents. Anyway, although we may see deer-as-roadkill-food differently, I certainly echo labmomma's sentiments when I say that the story of the deer that she hit being allowed to die a slow death - in pain - as being preferable to a quick bullet putting it out of its misery - because the cops were concerned that people would see them shoot it (!?!?!?!) was disturbing at several levels. Comments (44)I don't know of any true blues or true blacks. Some roses have several diff colors in them like pinks, yellows, oranges, etc but no full out rainbows, colors diff on every petal or anything like that. There are striped roses. There is really an all green rose. I would only buy it from a reputable nursery though, not ebay lol. "Blue" roses seem to really run in the different colored purple ranges. Some are more lavender with grey tones like Blue Girl (my favorite rose) there is Wild Blue Yonder, and Blue For You that are darker blu-ish purple tones. Some look bluer than others. There are a lot of good purple toned roses. Some seem to get more true purple or darker hues in cooler weather. Some people say soil acidity plays a role. "Blacks" are usually dark burgundys that with the right environmental conditions look black. There is a ongoing thread over on the gw rose forum with much discussion on black roses....See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
