Does Anyone Have Hydrangeas?
Comments (14)The Nikko should not be cut back until it is clear where the dead branches are. In my area (zone 5B-6A) I wait until mid May at least then cut off above the green shoots. By cutting the Nikko back like that they cut off this years flowers which actually set last year. Endless Summer is a type of hydrangea will bloom off this year's growth but Nikko will not. Nikkos are beautiful but not reliable bloomers in my area because of the winter kill issue. In my area, unless sited perfectly, they will only bloom maybe 1 year out of 3 or 5. Annabelle are a different type (arborescens), they can be cut back. I know how you feel. I had someone pull up lilies that took years to establish because she thought they were weeds (I can see one, but after seeing the bulb wouldn't you guess they weren't weeds?). I almost cried....See MoreWould anyone like to see a forum just for swaps?
Comments (33)Guess I can add my voice here.....I've enjoyed the swaps that I have participated in on this forum. I've hosted and swapped both - now I just need to put my pedal to the metal and get those blocks made into quilts! It is possible for some of us to get burned out doing swaps, so for now, I'm not joining any block exchanges until I get some UFOs made. I would caution against having too many swaps going at the same time as it can get confusing. And that's all I'll say about that. I enjoy swapping with the quilters I know here, but then, I've swapped with strangers also and that was fine. But it is more personal when you know who made your blocks. I don't have time to go visiting a lot of forums and I feel I have a lot of myself invested in this forum...so I stay here. Teresa...See MoreAnyone grow Hydrangea Paniculata ‘Dharuma’?
Comments (1)I planted a Dharuma last fall, so it is finishing its first season in my garden. It has the lacier flowers that I like, similar to Quickfire, rather than the dense panicles of something like Limelight. Mine is in full, all day sun like pretty much all of my H. paniculatas, though currently it is somewhat shaded by tall phlox since the shrub hasn't grown tall yet, so I am not sure that my experience is of help to you. I'd go ahead and ask on the hydrangea forum, specifiying which variety, but also commenting that you want info from folks at a similar latitude (there's one regular poster there from PA which would be similar) and similar light levels. IME all H. paniculatas have similar preferences so you can ask about the light levels in your heading. I think that 4-5 hours would be enough for good flowers since 6 hours is considered full sun, but the quality of the shade is important also. Is it bright shade from reflected light or dappled shade with some sun coming through leaves? Or is it dense shade caused by an overhanging dense tree? Is the sun only early and late in the day (less intense) or do you have some mid-day or afternoon sun? Or you could just plant it and see how it does . . . do you have another spot you could move it to with more sun if it doesn't bloom enough for you?...See MoreAnyone growing Hovaria Kaleidoscope Hydrangea Hobella?
