Caterpillar ID help, please?

Almost 20 mm long, found it on River birch. Any idea?

I've heard it called the masked birch caterpillar, Drepana arcuata. It's a fascinating insect.....be sure to look it up to learn about it.

Thank you again! I am actually fascinated by this caterpillar. Visited it today and was amazed by how well it blended in with the leaf. Plus I just noticed the funky “face” on it’s back end.

The two that most resemble the photograph that i have found are the Striped Garden Caterpillar (specifically includes Milkweed among the caterpillars food plants) and the other would be the Yellow Striped Armyworm (Spodoptera ornithogalli). There is a photograph in Wagner's CATERPILLARS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA that is very close...about as identical as you can get. Good luck in your search! Bob
