Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil in zones 5-6?
Comments (14)Ispahan - thanks for the encouragement to post about my experiences with hardiness and winter protection in zone 5. I guess I'm a good test location for toughness in zone 5, given all of our ups and downs all year. I'll start a new thread, actually several threads, in the Roses forum since you'd asked about HTs and other moderns. Once I checked back through my records, I found quite a few HTs and Floris that are reliably cane hardy in my zone 5 yard, and it'll be interesting to see if that carries through for others of you in zone 5 or folks like Michael in zone 6 mountains. I'll wait till fall to post something about my strategies for winter protection in cold zones, since it's largely too late to worry about it now and it'd get lost by the time folks wanted to remember it. I did take Melissa's advice too and posted a comment for Barcelona with the information I mentioned here. I'd be happy to send that in an email to the HMF folks as well, including my other personal hardiness observations, but I couldn't find an email on the site even with a premium membership. I do have the intent to contribute to that site since I rely on it all the time, but time gets away (I started posting my garden last fall and only got through the A and B on my list). Comments (4)Saucers will act as salt collectors in the long run. I feel their use has more cons than pros. Since the pots are on soil and not hardscape I would just leave the pots without the saucers. In due time the roots will penetrate the soil and you will have hybrid potted x planted plants! (plus nice fat weeds growing round the pot base...)...See MoreToo early to declare good 'uns vs dud 'uns for the year?
Comments (25)That is so odd about DdB, no I don't have any Eucalypts anywhere nearby. I noticed the downward-pointing floppy wilted (yes, also slightly rolled) leaves when it was still in the pot I bought it in and even returned it to the nursery to ask advice. I was sure it must be verticillium wilt or similar. They said it was normal for DdB. I 100% know it had enough water as it was in a pot getting watered everyday! I even watered twice daily to see if I could change the new wilted growth but nothing happened and it wasn't even hot. I had significant misgivings about planting it in the ground, I guess I'll just keep an eye on it!...See MoreBurling's Francis Dubreuil & Barcelona
Comments (22)Fields of the Woods ? someone on the forum talked about it last year, I didn't recognize it by the rooster name, I am really glad you reminded me. The shape is what seems unusual and outstanding to me, although hardiness has become most important over looks in this climate. Snow on the hillls and still below freezing lastnight. I was happy to read Rhode Island Red is tough as a rooster too. Just yesterday I was reading about Crepescule again. Can't remember if it was zone five or six, every year i'm drawn to it before making the final cut. The well established Alchemist that has been a healthy workhorse noses out the competition in that color range. If I move, or stay here and open up a new full sun flower bed along the South side of the house I'll get to exterior decorate some more. Thanks for the ideas....See Morepippacovalent
