A couple of birds eye views

I would like to see your table turned the other way...end to the glass doors. Yes, rug could be bigger but you can get that in time.

You know, it hadn't even occurred to me to try that.
I like the way this looks, but it feels a bit like it is cutting off the traffic path to he bedroom and encroaching on the living space.
Do I have to have the table centered on the sideboard wall? I feel like I do but I can be funny about stuff like that

• IMO turning the table was a good move
• Take away the mirror from the area
• Select a larger rug for under the table. Select a color that anchors the table and chairs.
• Remove the tub chair. With all the room in the area, you don't need to be shoving in a corner
• How about a large tree to try to fill some of the space that is not taken up visually with a dining room set that seems too small overall.

The mirror is just there temporarily until I wither find it a home or give it away.
The table has another leaf I could add, would that help? Of course, then the current rug is really too small until I find a replacement.
I love large plants, where would you put a tree?

I'd get the 10 by 14 and make it luscious. The dog matches the dining room set. lol

I was afraid of that! Why do rugs double in price from 9x12 to 10x14!? :P

I guess I might as well start looking for 2 rugs, one for the living room as well, that will coordinate with each other. I think the existing one should work in the sun room area. That one is too small too. Crazy to think that's what we had in our old house in the living room and the size was fine.

Often the price is a combination of sq. ft & shipping which is more $$$

8x10 is 80 sqft.

9x12 is 108 sqft.

10x14 is 140sq.ft

Do you ever actually use the dinner table? If so, the space overhead must feel cavernous. If you can find a hanging lighting fixture that shines downward, and suspend it over the table at something closer to typical ceiling height, it would help dinner guests feel less exposed, less vulnerable. And you'd still have that fabulous height by day.

@Marco - We've only been in the house a few months and you're right, we don't use it often - games nights with the family and actual sit down dinners with extended family. I'd like to add a light fixture once I have the furniture placement exactly where I'd like it. The trusses above are scissors so there is access to run a new line when the time comes.

@BeverlyFLADeziner - it makes sense, but MAN does it make it hard to swallow going up in size!

@BeverlyFLADeziner - wow. I love nearly all of those options. I feel like any of them would make it feel really special sitting there at night. Because we only moved in in the spring we haven't had any dark evenings here yet - but some cool lights above and some twinkle lights in the back yard ... I feel like we are making magic here!

Larger rug for sure! It will allow you to add the table leaf and pull the chairs out a little more to give the overall arrangement more presence in the room. I agree with @BeverlyFLADeziner about removing the club chair; it feels very cramped over there. I'd like to see the credenza shift slightly to the right and the heron painting a little to the left. It feels a little tight next to the stair treads currently. The room is so vast that I think it could handle 1-2 large plants or trees and some smaller + medium scale plants too. I think a tree in place of the leaning mirror would be great and perhaps another to the right of the backyard sliding doors. Greenery really helps to make a home feel inviting and cosy.

Terra, Good! That's why it's good to live in the house for a bit and then have a fresh set of eyes look at the space. Take your time and just don't rely on something that can be purchased. Some times you have to create your experience.

I designed a pharmacy and we were tight for funds, so I found some branches I hung from the ceiling tiles and then suspended paper lanterns from the branches to create a 'setting'. It would be easy to illuminate them now with all the LED battery operated lights on the market.

I have a couple of med sized palms that I will put up on stools in those locations to get a feel for that. I love the idea of adding plants, I think I will also help marry the inside and out. I am so used to having a MUCH smaller space, I need to shake some old habits!

Any suggestions on chair fabric? I guess that will come after I find a rug that works.

When DH got home he didn't immediately love the rotated table but has agreed to live with it for a while.

I love the branches and paper lanterns, what a fun idea! My father in law spends a lot of time at the river, I should have him keep an eye out for me. Do you think something along those lines would work with the MCM furniture I've got there now?

Have barely scanned previous comments but suggest you put leaves in the table, then measure it and add 36-42" to every side of it for chair scoot and sit space on the new rug. Add a dramatic hanging chandy or pendant light fixture and it will be a wow.

oh my goodness! thank goodness be you got rid of the sunken living room! We're you able to keep the old floor and lace in new or did you have to replace it all?

Rachel - we weren't able to keep the floors. The house has in-floor radiant heating throughout, not very a good combo with solid wood. The wood they'd installed looked pretty good in the pictures but in person it was very gappy and not in great shape. We left it in the bedrooms but replaced the floor in the living areas to be consistent throughout

You might want to explore having a carpet bound to the size you need. There are many sisal looking carpets available. The cost may well be much less.

Those looking for an update ... it currently looks much the same. Chairs are to be upholstered in a dark grey/almost black. In the queue for our favorite electrician to come put in a light. Moved out the chair and mirror and might have gone a smidge crazy adding plants.

While this is active ... any comments on using 3 of these in different sizes and height? 20, 22 & 24" diameter.

OMG they are gorgeous. I’m not a pro though so have no idea about scale etc.
