Comments (6)It may well be planted too deeply, but I don't think that's the explanation of the sudden wilting. My guess would be a late frost. Much of the East has had a very early spring which spurred many plants into much earlier than normal growth. Then about a week and a half (?) ago, a Canadian cold front moved through bringing short lived but damagingly low temperatures. Secondary buds should sprout and the tree should leaf out again. It is in a somewhat weakened condition, so keep well watered, unfertilized and unstressed. Bacteria in the soil??? There's always bacteria in the soil....See MoreCornus alternifolia Golden Shadows
Comments (8)Thanks David and bboy. I think I've picked its spot and I appreciate the help. I have a 23-year-old species that was planted near our front door at a landscaper's recommendation. It started much larger than my Golden Shadows - I don't remember how long it took to take off, but it's been a very vigorous grower. The shape has been totally destroyed because I was forced to prune it...it's just way too big for its location. So I want to give Golden Shadows lots of space, but don't want it to look overwhelmed by plants around it while it reaches a reasonable size. Your posts helped rule out one potential spot - thanks again....See MoreGolden Shadows Dogwood 'cornus alternifolia'
Comments (8)The site I would like to put it is on the East side up closer to the house in a large flower bed that butts up to the foundation east side of the house. I will see it right in front of our bay window in the kitchen so I would like something that has some form of interest all year. It will get morning sun and part afternoon until the house shades it in the afternoon and evening. The soil is very rocky with some clay so I thought of digging out quite a bit and adding compost. Any advice or tree ideas? Thanks!...See MoreRelated Professionals
