Wainscoting and Cabinet/Coutertop installation order
Comments (3)It's an "either/or" scenario. You can install the wainscoting first, but if the baseboard or bottom rail will interfere with the vanity sitting tight to the panels on the wall, the baseboard will have to be cut away. Or fillers can be used on the vanity. Still it mostly depends on the how the vanity and backsplash will relate to the wainscoting and the top rail of the wainscot. If the wainscot consists of a top rail, the vertical boards, and a bottom rail, you could run the vertical boards, then install the vanity, then cut the top and bottom rails to butt into the sides of the vanity. Again, it's really too wishy washy for me to describe without knowing the type of wainscoting, the make up or the type of vanity, the type of backsplash, and the heights of them all. I've done them either way, so it depends. Vague enough? (g) Mongo...See MoreRemove Baseboards or Use Quarter Round for New Hardwood Install?
Comments (9)Appreciate the responses. Do I need to worry about adequate expansion room for the new hardwood if I don't remove the existing baseboards and just use shoe molding? We had the house built 20 years ago and the hardwood and carpets were installed underneath the 4.5 inch baseboards. I really don't care to lose a portion of the height of my baseboards by using quarter round or shoe molding. This would result in a "mismatched" look when compared to the baseboards in my other rooms. My preference is to have the baseboards removed prior to the new floor installation. I just have to decide if it makes more sense to try to preserve the original baseboards for re-installation or have new baseboards installed and painted. Here are some pics of the trim and baseboards in the 2 rooms that will have hardwood installed. Both rooms were recently painted, but I don't mind repainting baseboards as long as I get the best quality installation of the new floors and baseboards that look like these again when done. Comments (1)depending on the thickness of the wainscoating, wainscoting first. If the wainscoting is lower than the cabinet, leave the moulding at the top of the wainscoat off until you install the cabinet and run that trim to it.If that's the case, the upper part of the cabinet up past the wainscoat will have a gap to cover w/trim....See MoreUpdating my 1997 home- should I paint the wood trim and wainscoting?
Comments (84)Tex max Im not sure what I want to do in the piano room yet…I wish the floors were all the same throughout the house- that will have to be a project for later- We May remodel the kitchen next year and that is when we would replace the floors throughout the 1st floor. Columns- either they should go away or be wrapped differently. For now we are leaving them. We have so many other projects currently in the works!
