Duraseal Warm gray on red oak

Anyone ever use this stain? It’s the newer line of colors. Hard finding pics.

I suggest going a few steps darker than the cabinets. Your dark(er) counter top will be your inspiration. The grain in the wood is quite strong which can be used to your ADVANTAGE! If you water pop your wood, the grain will take on the stain a snick more...thereby giving you the DEPTH of colour you crave WITHOUT going so dark that you remove the light from the room (or the floors). I suggest a mid-tone stain with water popping. I would work a little into the 'green' range as your counter top 'reads' cool tones more than orange tones. Let the GRAIN take a strong stain (water popping) so that you can get all the contrast you desire WITHOUT having to go too dark. Make sure your refinisher offers some colour samples on your floor (must include a coat of finish to show the true depth of the colour...and if you water pop make sure the water popping is done with all the colour samples). Once your samples are down, you can take the time to figure out which stain works BEST in your lighting situation as well as with your counter top.

Making a sample will give you the quickest answer. Your mixture sounds more like medium brown cut with weathered oak.

Lol -- get out of my brain! We had a hickory engineered hardwood floor very much like that in our previous home (see pic) and I loved it too. This was our previous home: But I hope you're just leaning toward mid-brown rather than attempting to get too close to the pic you posted, since it features hickory vs. red oak, it's wide plank, it's hand-scraped, etc. Now, both of us are dealing with a very different beast. No matter what color stain you choose, it's going to have a red cast unless you go very dark or take extra measures to reduce the red. There's a two-step product called Bona Red Out that can be applied to the raw wood after sanding, and it will neutralize a lot of the red and pink. You can also select a stain that has some green in it, since green is red's opposite on the color wheel. Since you like Jacobean, you could try mixing it with Duraseal Silvered Gray (a light color), and with Rustic Beige (a little darker), and with Provincial (darker, but still with a cool/ashy undertone).

I am working on the same thing. I have red oak floors and want the light look, too.- although not quite as pale as the floors you linked. I had beautiful light white oak floors at my previous house using 3 different Duraseal colors. I've done tons of reading and it just isn't easy to duplicate with red oak. And some red oak is redder than others. I was told that country white on red oak will basically read pink. Since I don't want a pink floor that is out. Refinisher who only uses Duraseal recommended just a clear sealer which definitely won't give me the color I want. And I haven't found any Duraseal products that will give the right look- unless you possibly bleach the wood first. I don't want to do this, so I'm looking at Bona's Red Out product which is fairly new. I'm meeting with a new floor refinisher on Tuesday who has some other ideas as well. I can let you know his thoughts. And I'm not too worried about light floors going out of style. I live at the coast and light is always popular.

The only way to REALLY tell the final look is to apply a single coat of poly over top the colour. An oil based or oil modified finish WILL ADD more colour....like yellow or orange.

So far, the samples in your link show a lovely grey. The darker "left" side will be grayer. The lighter "right" side will be the colour that lets pink show through. That's the danger of using a gray over red oak.

Gray is a mix of black and white. White over red oak shows pink. Therefore any gray (ahem...white based) will show some form of pink. The lighter the gray, the more WHITE in the mix. The more WHITE you have the more PINK will show through with red oak.

So...the only way to REALLY see the pink would be to put down a coat of poly over the finish. That will add depth to the colour. And in those depths you will see pink. Especially the lighter gray.

Remember: white on red oak = pink. The lighter the gray the more white you have in the mix = pink.
