New Begonia Id Please
Comments (2)Mrao, I have that begonia too and like you, I don't know the name. But I have to say, it has the most annoying habit of dropping it's lowest leaf as soon as a new leaf opens. I hate that because I only get about 3 leaves at a time. Perhaps I'm not doing something right, I don't know, but this is the only begonia that has behaved in this manner. Maybe it needs a good spanking....See MorePlease ID these 2 Begonias! (Post 2)
Comments (7)Thanks everyone for your answers! Donna, your advice on propagation I will try. The last time I propagated the one on the other post, I just used potting mix, and chopped the leaf into little bits. I will try your method next time. I am a bit worried about using the sandy soil up here, as I live in the tropics and just don't think I can keep it damp enough with the heat and humidity. I might try your method in succulent mix, and do another with potting mix just to see what works better in this climate. Also you are right, the second plant does grow by stem cuttings. Thank you for your advice! Tiffany, thank you for the link to the American Begonia website. I have never come across this website and I am finding it very interesting. Hc Mcdole, thank you for your ids in what you think they are, because I simply had no idea where to start. I will explore the names that you gave on the internet. Well, between the 2 posts I have a bit more knowledge. Many thanks to all for your input! You guys are just awesome!...See MorePlease i.d. my Cane Begonia
Comments (3)Thanks Laurie. I have had her positioned in a better lighted position since this picture was taken, but no signs of blooming yet. I noted you said you thought yours wasn’t blooming because of too much light? Is that typical? Am I correct to understand that they bloom quite easily and generally late summer or fall, or can they bloom at any time? I wonder because I have a beautiful Gryphon Begonia which I understand is related to the cane types, and it blooms when the daylength is quite short. Mine bloomed for me in February of this year ( indoors of course) after being outdoors until close to my first frost( late September here).1st pic blooming in February. 2nd pic as it appears outside recently. Just thought I’d share that, hope you don’t mind....See MorePlease id these Begonias for me!
Comments (31)Bernie, Your leaf of Maurice may root but I kind of doubt it will make a plant. I had a leaf of some superba type canes (Sophie or Lana or maybe Irene) that rooted but never produced a plant. There was a grant from the ABS many years ago to a college botany study to see if there was a secret to obtaining a plant from a cane leaf - never happened. I wonder if tissue culture would work but I seriously doubt that too. The odd thing is some Asian cane looking types can be propagated by leaf such as amphioxus and brevirimosa. Go figure. I have all my begonias indoors now and looking halfway decent. back corner of the big utility room with many canes. Valida is the leaf floppy shrubby begonia. Mr. Hunt is too tall to fit under this light Taconite is the big leaf and Shaun's Dream is the green curly leaf rex my aconitifolia is nearly six feet tall. The cane is Comte de Lesseps. Virginia Jens is a big honking begonia. Judy Cook is a big rex like begonia My own seed grown maculata hybrid Syngoniums and a cane called Hazel's Front Porch in this aluminum pan (been in the same pan for years) Here is the newest stem coming up in the pan....See MoreRockdale (RI Z6)
