What's on your wish list??
Comments (3)The top roses on my list are from the hybridizer of a favorite rose of mine, Ascot (I finally received Augusta Luise a little while ago, too, from this hybridizer). They are German roses from Tantau and are not available in the U.S., but the lucky Europeans can get them. See these gorgeous roses on HMF. Lavender Ice Pastella Mariatheresia Astrid Grafin von Hardenberg Tea Time Others I'd like to have: Froufroutante Jackie Climbing Powder Puff Larissa Belinda's Dream Pomponella St Elthelburga Star of the Republic Tuscan Sun There are so many more, but listing them all gets to the point of ridiculousness. Comments (43)Jeannie, How about one of the Ayrshire ramblers? I have been rather falling in love with 'Venusta Pendula', which is a very vigorous once-bloomer with pink-edged white semi-double blooms and dark pretty foliage. We have summer heat, which you folks do not, I know, but I hear VP does well in Germany, another place with cool summers. The Ayrshire ramblers, bred from Rosa arvensis, one of the few European members of the Synstylae group, have a reputation for doing well in poor conditions. I don't know if they would have disease problems in your area: mine are healthy until late autumn, when the older leaves get black spot. I can handle that. 'Venusta Pendula' is generally considered to be not fragrant, but mine is decidedly myrrh-scented: either other gardeners can't smell this fragrance, or they're listening to each other rather than going out and smelling the rose. Or I have the wrong rose, but I don't think so. Another Ayrshire rose, I believe similar, 'Ayrshire Splendens', is definitely myrrh-scented. I have this variety too, but am still getting to know it. The myrrh fragrance is thought to have entered the English roses through an Ayrshire ancestor of one of David Austin's founding roses, 'Constance Spry' I believe. If you can get cuttings, by the way, the Ayrshire roses root very easily, though this is true of ramblers in general. The chief item on my wish list is that the 78 or so roses that make up our definitive order from Petrovic in Serbia arrive reasonably promptly and in good order, and in a period when it's not raining hard or snowing. That's a fair amount of wishing, but not totally unreasonable. Mr. Petrovic told me he'd be sending the order out around the end of November, but I haven't heard anything from him (I need to get in touch), but it's been raining here for the last week, and perhaps they've had weather equally unsuitable for digging over there. It's been raining abundantly here this fall--and we have so far no slides and no signs of slumping on our land--and temperatures are forecast to begin dropping next week after a very mild fall. So, so far, so good. I've done most of my planting and taking cuttings, so my main task after the Petrovic roses are planted is pruning and maintenance. There are a lot of roses, but I have three months. I am looking forward to the sun coming out, as it's been raining for the last week. Melissa...See MoreWhat's on your wish list?
Comments (18)Some mentioned a while back that they could detect a slight scent on Apple Blossom, as well... but I couldn't smell anything. Jewel is the only one I've ever been able to detect a noticeable scent from. I didn't smell anything from the H x johnsonii I had at one time, either. I think it must be very relative to our individual ability to catch different smells... Then again, competition for my nose has been acres of roses, lilies, and other perennials, every growing season, for a very long time... some so overpowering that they drown out everything else, and some that occasionally waft on the breeze bringing a hint of a lovely perfume. "Autumn Damask" and many of our species type roses hold the awards for most scented, most perfumed, most likely to attract olfactory attention! It's really too bad that more Hippeastrum blooms don't have scent... though they do have size and color as their most attractive features to would-be pollinators....See MoreWhat is on your Christmas Wish List?
Comments (13)Hello Everyone, Sounds like we all have been busy!!! : ) K, I really am glad to hear that Plumeria are hypoallergenic!!! LOL...now i can tell the DH thats it is truly not the Plumeria that is causing the "eye roll.." LMAO. Maybe, its a "winter thing.." LOL... Seriously, i did the dance yesterday when i brought in another cutting from a friend when we had lunch! I thought that i was quick enough to place it upstairs with all of the other gems..but i was caught in the act.. : ) Its a good thing that it was small!! Thanks Peg!! Psycho is a wonderful choice, im sure you will have great success in finding a cutting!! : ) Mike, I know what you mean about all of the $ going for the kids, just wait until they get older...the price of each item only gets bigger!!! My kids are all grown and will be here for CHristmas, im looking forward to a fun and relaxing time with them. Enjoy your little ones..they sure do grow up way to fast!!! : ) Colors are a wonderful thing... Im sure you will have a few colors in your spring collection... Have a wonderful Christmas!!! Alex, I sure hope that your Pudica will turn around for you!!! How has your weather been up north? Sounds like your Plumies want to stay active... The ones that i have under lights and the ones just sitting in my great room are doing well. They are all still happy and with most of their leaves. I am just letting them do what they want. It is very interesting to see how all of the different varieties react to winter. Some are ready to rest, others dont want to be silent at all. I will just listen to what they want to do. I agree with wanting more colors... I also forgot to mention that California Sally is another "wish..." Nice to see you, how are your Palms doing, have you put up any protection yet? Qaguy, Love all of the pictures!!! You have certainly been busy!! All of your decorations look wonderful. I hope you are having a great turnout for your charity!! What a great way to help out..You and your wife have done a great job. I can undertand that she is ready to take it all down since you started in Nov. My tree is up, lights are on...but the ornaments will be on soon. Maybe tomorrow... Glad to hear you have a new camera. The old ones sure are easy to use, especially when you have had them for awhile... Mike, I dont know what to say, Thank you for that special post! You have truly warmed my heart... Thank you!!! I am very happy.. : ) My kids are doing well, Hubby has new "eye drops" LOL... Really, he is doing great and so is my Mom!! Thanks for your concern... The greenhouse will be fixed, hopefully soon. It has been a problem, but i have had some wonderful help!!! The baking is mostly done, and now i am ready to relax. I do have time off for the holidays and i am really enjoying the time with my family and with the joy of what Christmas brings... You have always been so generous as well, thank you for all that you do. I know that someone else has been a big help to you here on this forum. Very kind and generous as well! : ) Thank you for everything Mike!!! Merry Christmas to you all.. Laura...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
