I disagree with CAGE Design Build when they said "15-18 inches". The standard space between the countertops and bottom of the upper cabinets is 18". Anything lower, especially all the way down to 15 or 16 inches, will look cramped, and also not fit things like coffee maker, mixer, etc.

While we are at it, the standard distance from the floor to the top of the counters is 36".

How tall are your ceilings, and how tall will your upper cabinets be?
