Lower than standard height countertop
Comments (23)cotehele, 1/2 of my base cabs were trimmed and installed Friday (I was so excited I couldn't sleep). I only got to see them at night in poor light (kitchen lighting not hooked up yet), but I loved the 3/4" reduction in height. I will be on site later today and will double-check the toe room. If you haven't already put your flooring in, it might be an option to install the flooring (depending on type) after the cabs, thereby effectively lowering the counter level. I did just have a 3/4" wood floor put in and suggested this to my contractor - he said it was possible but preferred to shave 3/4" off the actual cabinets toe kicks. I did realize I was probably losing my chance for toekick drawers, but felt the trade off was worth it. The only toekick drawers that I knew about were also very expensive (for my budget at least). My range is going to be in my island and I am leaving it at regular height. Many in GW like remodelfla have recommended two counterheights so I followed suit. jon1270, thanks for correcting me so tactfully - I didn't realize it was only the uppers that were in 3" increments....See MoreChange kitchen/family room bar to counter height?
Comments (17)We have a U-shaped kitchen, open to the dining room, with the sink at the end. Anything on the counters near the sink is visible from the dining room. The only time things tend to get piled up near the sink is if we can't put dirty dishes in the DW, because it's full of clean dishes. That situation never lasts too long. Anything more than that (needs to be hand washed, too lazy to open the DW) can easily hide in the sink. We love our sink tip-out for scrubbies, and hang our dishcloth in the sink (scroll down to the bottom of the attached link). Here is a link that might be useful: dishcloth solution...See Morewhat space should I leave between counter top and bottom of upper cabi
Comments (8)I agree with M Miller. 18" is standard and manufacturers of small appliances use that standard to design their appliances. Another thing to factor in -- light rail. If you plan light rail, you might want to consider 18" + the height of your light rail. That way, taller small appliances will still fit. I wish we had done that. We planned for 18", not realizing the light rail would take away from our usable height. (No, our KD did not mention it.) My KA stand mixer (bowl lift) actually brushes the light rail when I slide it in/out from under the cabinets. I have a cover for it and I have to take the cover off b/f I can slide it past the light rail....See Moreconverting bar height island to counter height?
Comments (18)Where did you get those chairs? We are currently getting estimates on changing our bar to counter and changing our granite to quartzite. I love that counter top! Thanks!...See MoreShannon_WI
