I’m wanting to add height to the walls but not sure what to do. That’s my next dilemma.

Could I please see more photos of the space? Maybe a view from the upper level as well as from the lower level? (If you add drapes, one side is going to have to be shorter than the other......not a good idea). We can come up with something better.

You have no wall space on the right side to add curtains. You'd be covering up much of the window. Also with the stairs, you'd have to hang short curtains. Not a nice look.

Curtains would not add height, instead it'll look choppy.

I wouldn’t cover the transom.

Don’t mind the balloon. We just had a birthday party. I have awkward walls and places that I’m not sure what to do with them so I tried to add bits and items that my husband and I like. Then it became an overwhelming. I’d like it to be comfortable and bringing the outside inside kind of feel.

Keri, you really have fabulous house. This is a comment I make often to clients, so don't be concerned: you have too many decor items. When there are that many, people no longer see them. I have a phrase "When too much is going on, nothing is going on".

Here are a few starting tips:

1) Please remove the rug from under the dining table. It just chops things up and chairs are pulled out beyond the edge of the rug, so no a good thing. Would you be willing to do that?

2) I would say remove all from the walls and start over, but I think you might no be willing to do that?

3) How about if we start with the furniture. Can you tell me about that chais and sofa? Do they go together? Do you use both of them?

Thank you so much. We moved here in January and I just can’t seem to find an arrangement that I like. I can redo the table but the walls maybe not so much. I can take down some and I appreciate the help with any ideas. We are a family of six and always have family members over so seating is a must.

The reason the windows are not a highlight is because of all the other items on the walls. I also would paint the walls a lighter color.

As far as the seating area, do you have a tv? Is this just a small seating area and you hang out somewhere else?

Option 1) move sofas out and put 4 chairs in a circle.

Option 2) move chaise out. Face sofa facing the large window. 2 chairs on the straight wall. Ignore the angled rail area.

I took a second look and kept saying out loud..”OH, oh, oh.” I am overwhelmed by all the stuff. The space is so dark. The windows look fine ...the walls are so dark.
The Welcome sign in the entry did just the opposite to me, especially when one looks up to see deer heads. There is no cohesion...just stuff. PURGE!

If I moved the sofa to face the window, wouldn’t it be to squishy for seating around the table?

Not necessarily. Hard to tell how deep those sofas are. A 3rd option would be to remove the chaise, sofa against the wall where the chaise is now and 2 chairs facing the sofa.

I will have to look into getting some chairs. I do love the idea. I feel like it’s so full with awakard corners. I was also curious with high ceilings, if I take down the small stuff should I add a giant picture on a wall or what do you suggest for it?

I think taking down the shelf and the 2 sets of pictures and replace that with one nice framed art. Also lower the sailboat picture , it looks too high. i would take out all of the fake plants also , the tree makes it feel cluttered. once you move the sofa and chair, I think the rug under the table would look really nice there and lighten up that space

I honestly would take down all and start over. That shelf above the chaise is scary. I would continually think the items would fall on me.

I am big on mirrors. I think a series of skinny mirrors along the sitting area would be stunning. If you use the 4 chairs in a circle they could be tall mirrors. Between the tall skinny windows, perhaps a piece of tall art.

Do you need those drapes? If not, remove them.

Everywhere I look, there is just too much incongruous, small items. This will take awhile. Do you like this? See very simple.

Thank you for all you’re input. This is all really helping me. I guess I have a few more questions. Should I make a family picture wall or leave them there? All my plants are real so should I get rid of some or should I add some to the top of the cupboards? I’m not really sure what to do with them either. I would like to show the pictures and have plants to bring some nature inside. But not to sure how to mesh it all well but not over whelming.

I do really love that yes. Also the skinny windows by the table I do need the curtains, we get sun in the wall of windows and through the skinny windows all day. It’s just really cloudy and a dark day here today.

You have to think "big to small". No sense in adding decor until you have furniture arranged. I do not recommend a family picture wall. It is overwhelming. A few photos strategically placed are fine.

Plants can be added. Again, furniture has to be arranged first.

That’s gorgeous!! I totally see the potential if I were do that. I’m loving the idea the more I look at it. Where I have the sail boat picture I have the other wall across from it, what do you suggest with that wall. I don’t think I sent a picture of it.

Maybe a piece of art.....but I always do the furniture arrangement first.

An idea.......since you have 6 and that table looks really crowded. Can you buy a larger table, turn it in the other direction and move it toward the seating area? In other words, the seating area would be eliminated and the chandelier moved down toward the old seating area. Table only. Then, you might be able to put a large buffet on that wall.

It depends. Will you be buying an entire new set? You might be able to get away with those chairs, If you like them) and a new table. I'd search houzz for photos of dining rooms you like. I don't know what style you want. You could buy an extendable table that would fit a ton of peolple when you have extra guests.

Hmmm I will have to look into that one and see what I like better. Back to the seating arrangement. I totally forgot a have a matching ottoman that matches the couch. Would there be a way to swing that into there instead of having two couches and only have one chair?

I was saying above: would you consider eliminating the seating area? Turn the dining table the other way and move it down toward the stairs. Then you have much more seating at the table and don't need the seating area at all?

My mother in law had 7 children who all had children and grand children and a few great grand children before she passed away. I lost count after about 50 progeny. We bought her a frame that changed pictures stored on the internet. She could sit and look at wedding pictures and birthday pictures and baby pictures all day and she didn't need the Great Wall of China to hang all the pictures. The kids could all post pictures so she always had some fresh pictures to enjoy.

Digital frames are amazing. They bring back soooo many memories.
