Kitchens Paint Design Dilemma

Help coordinating wood trim, paneling, wood floors and kitchen

I want to update the main living area and kitchen.
#1 issue : ugly yellow/orange wood floors — definitely going to refinish (what color stain)??
#2 issue: want to update kitchen cabinets to soft white /better go with the backsplash, but what to do with all the wood trim?

On one hand , paint it all like my front rooms, but what about the massive window wall in the living room?

Ack!! I’m stuck on what to do. Paint it all, leave it all or somewhere in between. If the wood stain didn’t have such an orange tint, it would be easier to figure out.

Sue Bower , Those look like Oak floors. You can refinish them with a natural water based poly and they would looks lots better! A light whitewash would also look very pretty. Stick with a clear water based poly finish over any stain color you choose.

Hi nostalgicfarm. Our floors are #2 grade oak. I wanted a lot of knots, but the dang installers cut most of them out! They are stained Dark Walnut (I think) and finished with tung oil. The trim is pine stained Sherwin Williams Walnut Wainscot. We currently have five inside pets; three cats and two dogs (54lbs and 10lbs). The floors have held up great. No scratches. Easy to clean. Most of the house is painted a warm white (looks much brighter in photographs) so it balances the wood doors, flooring, windows and beams. My youngest daughter has Anderson Hickory Forge in Ringing Anvil. She has four dogs, two cats, one 2yo. It is gorgeous and since it is literally hand scraped (not machine) there's no pattern. It has held up better than I imagined. The few places I've seen have been in the grooves (vacuum wheels?), and she just goes over with a felt tip staining pin, followed by paper towel to wipe up any extra. I’m sorry, I am bad and did not do a reveal thread! However, my architect did put up some photos on Houzz. Here is one and you can click through to the rest: We had not really furnished at this point so the pillows, table, chairs are not mine, and the pix do not show my favorite things, the knobs and the curtains: On the Marmoleum, I chickened out on Relaxing Lagoon and went with Volcanic Ash. (Although I did put Relaxing Lagoon in my laundry along with some crazy pink curtains and love it.) Feel free to ask any questions if you want specifics on anything.

Whoa boxer, that range hood on the second one looks insanely far forward and low! Eek, I would be worried I would crank my head on that over and over. Talk about form over function with that one. Dilly: I love the idea of a lighter counter sitting atop your wood cabinets. I agree though that if you're worried about it looking too cigar boxy you should include some type of painted cabinetry somewhere. I feel that your inspiration photo is basically a white kitchen utilizing dark wood elements to bring it some tone. As far as radiant heat goes, I know it feels great and does heat the room well. But you're going to have to weigh if you really want tile over wood. Tile can be unforgiving on your feet and especially on your dishes if dropped. Personally I find tile floors in kitchens to be too hard for my tastes, even though my floors are hickory (an extremely hard wood). Something about wood just feels more homey. Also, I don't know what era your home is from, but if you're in a bit of an older home, wood might 'fit' better. Good luck with everything!

Hi Debbie - it looks like a lovely home! My approach to mixing wood grains is to let just one show off its grain pattern. The adjacent wood plays a back-up roll with subtle graining in a contrasting color. That way they don't fight each other. This is a lot easier to do when you can choose the type of wood itself. In your situation, I would most likely match the floor to the dark stain of the double oven cabinets. That may be way darker than you're thinking! The dark stain would knock down the visible graining of the floor. You might see if you can grab some samples of engineers wood floors in different stain colors to see how it looks with trim. You might consider painting the medium-stained kitchen cabinets to cut down on the number of wood grains competing in the space. Hope that helps! Best of luck with the project. Doug

There is really too much wood to make it cost effective to change all this. Maybe just paint the crown moulding the wall color or remove it. The current floor color has to stay.

First of all, look at your first picture, it makes your paint appear yellowish. Other pictures show it as a light aqua, or lt green, either of those two colors go great with your cabinets and floors. Your cabinets look to be in good condition, and your floor is beautiful.. Now, what I am seeing wrong with your kitchen, and quite possibly your other rooms is. Light bulbs. Your light bulbs are yellowish, and thats why the paint in the first picture shows so yellowish. Those light bulbs are changing the colors of your wood cabinets and floors. Before you make any decision on anything, replace your light bulbs. Led bulbs, that are daylight type, and have 4000, or 5,000k (cool bulbs), will change the entire look of your kitchen. If you have yellowish in your other rooms too, well, then change them too. Dont even try to pick a paint color without proper light bulbs. You just will not be happy.

I would paint the kitchen cabs and the wainscoting a warm white. Remove the crown moulding on the shorter walls except where it actually attaches to the built Ins. Leave everything else stained. I actually love the colour of your floors and that window wall is to die for.
