How do you like your decorative mirrors used as vanity mirrors
Comments (6)One night, while brushing my teeth in front of our large plate mirror, I noticed it looked a little off. On closer inspection I realized one of the clips had come away from the wall and the whole mirror was on the verge of coming off the wall! The clips had been installed with heavy duty plastic anchors, and the weight of the mirror over time had caused the drywall to eventually give way. We ended up remodeling the bathroom and installed a large, framed mirror using a heavy duty cleat hanger (Hangman is one brand) which is perfect. The cleat hanger is two long pieces of metal, one of which is attached to the wall; if the mirror is less than 16" wide I recommend trying to have at least one screw in a stud and use toggle bolts for the other screws. The other piece of metal is attached to the frame of the mirror. The two pieces of metal hook onto each other to securely attach the mirror to the wall. (We used this same type of cleat hanger to attach a custom stainless steel backsplash over our range in our kitchen; we had stainless steel wrapped around a large piece of plywood to add depth and dimension to the backsplash.) When we remodeled our second bathroom, we decided to keep the plate mirror, but used extra clips and toggle bolts as needed to make certain it wasn't going anywhere!...See MoreMaking a wall hanging from decorator fabric?
Comments (5)I've had a needlepoint that I stitched made into a wall hanging. I do lots of handwork but don't have a sewing machine anymore so I use a 'finisher' but impart lots of instructions to them. I requested tabs at the top to fit on a decorative wooden rod and I draped tassels at the edges. I used an upholstery fabric to frame the needlepoint area and covered it with gimp and edged the entire piece with a large welt. My finisher had to use an innerface (is that the correct term?) on the inside to make the tapestry hang with a bit more stiffness and in an even manner....hope this helps.......See MoreIs Ikat fabric still in style? Too trendy?
Comments (10)It's trendy, for sure. Very hot recently and I hope that makes it easier to find up here where I live. I really love it, though, and don't see myself getting sick of it any time soon. Though if I did, I'd probably get sick of it long after I might get sick of a heckuva lot of other patterns out there. I view it like any other pattern, though, really - good for pillows, accent pieces and MAYBE draperies. Or rugs. I don't see it as that different than orientals in that they provide a patterned background - but orientals often have more colors in them and are recognized as a classic, which make them more veratile. I'd love to find a pair of accent chairs in an Ikat. Ack, just used the "L" word twice. That's a probably a sign I should sign off! LOL I say go for it, if you find the right one. If in doubt, avoid it on the romans....See MoreHow to start - decorating a new (to us) home
Comments (28)The brown leather pieces have a very dated look. Choose furniture with straight, classical lines, nothing bulky, overstuffed or clumsy looking. If you can, stay away from brown leather furniture altogether because it's become a cliche since it's so overdone and nothing else looks good with it. You want furniture in more medium colors that will all work together, and not have a piece stick out like a sore thumb. Look at lots of rooms on Houzz or online by googling living rooms and narrowing it down by traditional, transitional and modern, and decide what style really speaks to you....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
