Empty Kitchen Cabinet Space

Hello everyone,

I am just moving into my first home, and I am getting new kitchen countertops and tile backsplash, but there is an empty wall in the kitchen where another cabinet should be. The reason we don't have a cabinet there is because the person who lived in the home before had it removed, and put a tv with a swivel stand there.

You all have such great ideas, and I was wondering what would be best to fill this empty space? I was thinking floating shelves, but would this be silly as it would only be on one side?

Would it be better just to find the type of cabinet it is and have it installed?

The thing that will be weird is currently there is "equal" space on either side of the window. By adding something there you will have a large empty spot on the right side.

But you could have a display cabinet built or add floating shelves.

What about floating corner shelves (not triangle shape, rather floating shelving that wraps that corner) ? Its sort of a prime location right above your dishwasher; if you have nice looking dishes you could ostensibly place the most used items there. I think a traditional cabinet would look to heavy there.

The area behind the barstools does look empty. Can't tell exactly the space that you have there. I would put a nice storage (maybe for glasses or bottles of wine). I think the reason you did a overhang on the kitchen counter is for someone to sit there to eat breakfast or for entertainment. Putting another high table behind for you to move chairs around every time someone wants to sit at the bar or the high table doesn't make too much sense. Just put something decorative that you can also use for storage. Don't think a nook table with benches would fit and hopefully you have another area that you can make a dining room area.

This is so much fun - so many options! I think first, evaluate your storage, is there anything you never seem to have a home for? What kind of clutter do you struggle with? (I struggle with mail and papers, personally.) There are so many options and you can have so much fun with it - either keeping whatever solution you land on white, or an accent color. But first - Spend some time really considering what you need more space for - and go from there! If you haven't already, I'd go through your entire kitchen and de-clutter, clean out, etc. You might find your answer in doing that! Whatever you do - have fun!! :)

My cat votes cat tower or aquarium. I'm all for the slot cars (seriously.. you totally inspired me to consider incorporating that into my living room....). But the indoor grow area made me lol.

Congrats on your new home! A first house is always exciting. My advice is to live there a while and see what you need. You might not need extra storage there. I think it would close in the kitchen to have a cabinet there. I'd opt for open shelving in that particular spot if I needed the storage.

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your feedback, to the point where I have tears in my eyes. I asked some of my family members what they think, and they looked at me and shrugged LOL.

Thank you for pointing out that if I put something on either side of the window, the right side would be empty, you are right that would look strange.

I really agree that a cabinet would make the kitchen look more enclosed, especially since it is a small kitchen.

I really like the idea of the floating corner shelves, and I never thought about doing that. I also think it will be very unique! I am going to look at some examples now.

I like NYCish’s suggestion of putting floating shelves that wrap around the corner in that spot. You could easily unload clean dishes, glasses, and/or mugs from the dishwasher onto those shelves. A vertical shaped piece of artwork (think tall and skinny) on the wall to the right of the window could nicely balance the look.

Great ideas, Carolae. You might want to wait on your backsplash, OP, before deciding on shelves. Depending on the tile you choose, you might want to tile the whole wall. Btw, gorgeous floor!

@clara texiera you could do something like this. not this length, but this is the idea of what i was getting at. It also acts as a nice stopping point for the backsplash.

This wouldn't be expensive, either,

I think shelves w/ dishes would work well in that location, here is an example with open shelves on one side wall & art on the other

Congrats on your first home! I rather like the visual relief of empty wall space there, maybe room for some bigger art than is in the photo... but if you need more storage then some floating corner shelves would be great.

First home? Fill the storage areas you have first of all. It's rather refreshing to have a bare wall next to a window . I'm clearing some things off shelves and tops of cabinets right now to have some work done next week. The more I put in the temporary boxes it is looking better and better and I realize how much accumulates over 23 yrs. You are starting out....things will happen ....just get adjusted to what is already there . If you like color and like doing things you can pick a bold wall paint just for the wall space on that window wall. Easy to paint the small area and enliven the look.
