My house is too brown, need ideas for painting (pics)
Comments (21)I'd consider a pale green. That works with the roof and also with your interior colors. I would not go more brown if that is not working for you already. BTW - I painted our wood siding and love the results. It had been an awful worn brown color and I painted it lavender because I could not stand it for another day. It took a ton of primer and paint to do, but the results were awesome. I know I'll either repaint later or use siding, but for now and for the coming years, it works so well. Our house went from ugly to cottage-y which is what I as trying to accomplish. When choosing the color, I wanted something that was not available as siding because with paint, you can choose exactly the color you want and are not tied to the siding mfr's palette. It would go more mainstream if we ever side it down the line. I suggest using quality paint and primer so it lasts longer before needing to be repainted. Here are the before pix (shown a few years before painting, was more worn looking) and the current look at sunset, with my cell phone, so not accurate as to the color. It is much more subtle a lavender shade where it even appears white until you notice the white trim and bricks....See MoreShutter and Trim Colors for Weathered Brown Lap Siding
Comments (3)Congratulations on your new home! Weathered shingle houses are VERY common in my "stomping grounds" of eastern NH and eastern Maine. The shingles tend to go gray more often than brown around here, but we do see quite a bit of that distinctive mixture of browns ranging from almost golden-y to a bitter-chocolate color. Probably the biggest thing to pay attention to is the color value of the roof - the accent colors should be about the same value (meaning lightness or darkness) as the roof. If the roof is too pale for the rest of the house it can look a little like the roof is going to lift off and float away, if it's too dark for the rest of the colors it looks overly heavy, like it's weighting down the house (a very common problem). If your roof is light-colored, like the verdigris color that's pretty popular for green metal roofing, look to the lighter tones in the variegated shingles and riff off those for the color value of your trim. The accent color I see paired with this siding most often is a rich browny-red, which would look wonderful and not necessarily all Christmasy with the green roof. If you want to "perk up" any window sashes or other details with a lighter color, a very deep cream or even putty would look nice, but don't tart it up too much. Another color I've seen work really well a few times is a slatey blue, although the success of that would again depend on the roof. Check out the deeper blues in the BM Historical line like Hale Navy or Newburyport Blue. When we were househunting two summers ago we looked at a little bitty antique (very early 19th century) Cape Cod with weathered-brown shingles. It had white window sashes and wide board-and-batten shutters (completely operable) and board-and-batten front door were a moderately deep, muted blue-green color. The heavier trim around windows and doors was the same as the shingles. IIRC the roof was halfway between bark brown and charcoal gray. It was a real charmer but not in a great location for us....See MoreTOO MUCH BROWN! Shutter/porch color?

Comments (27)I like the dark idea. Iron Ore is nice. BM Wrought Iron, SW Urbane Bronze, or here's one w/SW Peppercorn (ignore those shutters) I lik how they did the black trim work around the white windows. Landscaping will really add a lot. try to bring in some low ground plants w/a bit of color Here's a rear shot w/dark siding and no black trim around the windows Here's the dark trim on the fascia. this home had dark windows so it looks nice w/the dark trim. Here are your door in black. your pic is crooked and it's marked up already, so this is the best I could do If you could do something to the garage doors, it would look better. carriage hardware maybe? I don't think using this color will be anything to write home about. Other similar homes w/diff design ideas, just in case you're wondering...See Morejcwright529
