Matching stairs to Provenza LVP flooring

We’ve almost complete with the installation of our Sweet Talker floors by Provenza’s Moda Living line. We plan to remove the dated green carpet from the stairs to expose the wood beneath but the oak is really dark compared to the new floors now that we see them installed. Any ideas or suggestions on how to help them better match or coordinate without replacing the treads or covering them with carpet?

Here’s a picture of our stairs and floor that we just completed with Provenza Jet set. Yes, they make the stair nose pieces and that is what we used (in addition to the regular pieces).

I don't think you have oak on those stairs. You probably have fir or pine. Not many builders would cover up oak with paint and carpet but they are happy to cover fir/pine in a heart beat.

If I'm right and this is a soft wood, you are going to have one heck of an issue getting this lighter. Your next option is to go darker. I would look at a dark(er) colour on the treads (you might need to paint them...soft woods HATE to take stain) and then paint out the risers.

Then stain/paint the posts/railings in the same combination.

Chancielouise - Let me know what you decide to do and please post pictures. I have the same situation although my floors are indeed oak. I thought Provenza made stair treads and I’ve seen plenty of photos on Instagram with provenza sweet talker stairs. However, our flooring installer seemed to think we might have better luck sanding and staining the existing treads to match.

@kstewartau87 Yes, the sample boards, no matter the time of day, never looked to me like all the pictures look. I get screen colors vary, time of day, amount of natural light, kind of light bulb...yeah all of that. I was so disappointed when I brought the large samples home and they did not look good at all. I actually chose another color of provenza. Changed my mind at last minute due to a pit in my stomach feeling. Once installed, I was sooooooo happy I went for it despite those samples!! It's beautiful. For me: it does not show footprints bad, does not creek, feels quality under bare foot (but not like real hardwood), does not shot per hair bad. Prior to provenza I had a really dark rich laminate. It showed EVERYTHING and just the dog hair alone i was sweeping multiple times a day. Footprints anywhere light shines in and the water dribbles from my English Mastiff after drinking water were just embarrassing!! So happy I went with my gut!! Seriously. please find my pictures posted 2 years ago in this thread. There are several of my floor in different areas and one of the image that finally made me go back to my gut and install finally mine. Best wishes!

leftontheinside We got our First Crush installed a few weeks ago, and there are saw marks. Some of our samples made them look very busy, and others didn't have them at all. We went through a local flooring store. The saw marks are definitely there, but not noticeable when looking at the floor as a whole (I looked at a lot of pictures because the saw marks were almost a deal breaker). We love the floors. They are beautiful! HU-751872317 We got a custom taupe stain made that coordinates well with the floor. If you still need something, I can get the formula.

T. Love You said you used a tan wash on some red oak you had. Would you mind sharing that with me? We have white oak ordered, but have now been told it'll be the end of April before it's in. That won't work. Everything is at a stand still until we get the stair railings and balusters in. The floor isn't even in yet. :-( We can get the red oak in a couple of weeks, so we're going to get that instead. We did buy the stains you mentioned in this thread and put it on a sample of white oak and it looks great!!!! So, we will be using that when we get ready to stain. thank you so much for your help!!!

@hallettco, it's been a long day.....totally forgot the OP said LVP in her first post between my first comment and second comment. I was looking at what appeared to be solid wood in the pic she posted. FWIW, my builder installed red oak treads after we had very light white oak flooring installed and he clear coated them. It's not off terribly but it's been a bone of contention between us. It's not horrible but he gave us a discount so I'm living with them for now :/

Hi! Installation of Provençal sweet talker started today and I don’t like the stair tread. It’s a different shade from the floors and completely stands out. I read a while back that the stair treads don’t match the floors very well but I hoped the problem had been fixed but it hasn’t. Has anyone had this problem and what was your solution? Thank you!

We are considering doing our stairs with Provenza At Ease, to match the rest of our flooring. Our contractor warned us the stairs will be slippery (compared to the carpet we currently have on them.) For those that have done their stairs with the Provenza moda living line, do you find them at all slippery?

@Katie Tortonesi- we put Jet set on our stairs to match the rest of the flooring. Jet set has a bit of a cross-sawn grooving in it so it’s not super slippery. We’ve had it installed for 1.5 years and no one has fallen. It is different than having carpet though and takes a bit of getting used to. We have teenagers so no safety concerns. One thought we be to add a runner on the stairs afterward if you are concerned or have little ones.

I just installed sweet talker on my floors and am having trouble finding a stain for the hardwood stairs - what did you end up doing with this ?!

I ended up putting in the sweet talker stair tread. Once I saw it installed, I realized it didn’t look bad at all.
