Here are the two plants referenced in my first post. I tried to include that post in the Native Plants forum, but when I used the search bar it only gave me the option to select Native Plant Exchange.

Lysimachia ciliata? and Prunella vulgais.

Thanks so much. I think you’re right about the Prunella vulgaris, but after doing some research based on your suggestion I’m pretty sure that the Lysimachia is Lysimachia vulgaris, unfortunately. Well, at least two of the plants I asked about today aren’t noxious weeds!

I have a Senna corymbosa that was mislabeled when I got it, so it's much too big for its current spot. I'm considering moving it on the berm to the area where the 'head' of the creek is. I also have a Lindheimer's muhly that I'd like to place next to on that left (east end). The camera makes the whole area all look huge and really long but from the front, what's to the left of it, is the neighbor's driveway/front and what's behind it is my side yard and wooden fence. So there really isn't a field behing it, thought it may appear that way. I also have 2 switch grass 'Prarie Sky' Panicum virgatum that I think I'll put where there is a wedge of grass righ now between the head of the creek and the berm, where the water will funnel in. I think the switch grass will be OK being in the water when it rains hard. DH really likes grass and doesn't want to mulch the berm. For the winter I think I'm going to put a cover crop on it and then next spring we can do the Habiturf. We'll have to edge the front side of the berm to do that to be sure no other grass runs up in there. Then hopefully we can leave the berm unmowed. I am going to plant all of it between the creek and the house and I've already done carboard/mulch over a big portion of it. We've been waiting all this time to get the walk replaced but they finally told us they'll do it next week. So that will help me a lot getting going forward on this. I do have some of the plants that I've picked up on sale, repotted and kept in morning sun only. I'n hoping to have it all prepped and be able to get them in the ground late September/early October. I'll do some more pics after the walk way is finished.

Even if she kills the grass at the edge, it will soon fill in again from the lawn. Or tall weeds will invade the bare earth. My suggestion to her is to kill the grass for about 2ft from the creek edge either by smothering lasagna style or with careful application of Round Up, cover the bare area with mulch and install a root barrier between the lawn and mulch. She can then plant things that like a moist, sunny location like Joe Pye Weed, Cardinal flower, Monkey flower, Button Bush, Iris etc etc in the mulched area.

You are waaaaaay over watering the St Augustine under the tree. And you might be waaaaaay underwatering the St Aug out away from the tree. Oh wait! An hour 3x per week? That's not right either. Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall.

Lawn seed needs to be in direct contact with the soil to germinate properly and also for the ability for the roots to grow down deeply. You need to remove the leaves. Also, leaves, acorns or even conifer needles do not make soil acidic. That is a factor of the underlying mineral content of the soil and also to the amount of rainfall, to some degree. You need to test your soil pH before liming to see if necessary. You don't say where you are located but most cool season turf grasses prefer a slightly acidic soil anyway. Liming for these types of lawns is typically not necessary unless the pH is below 5.5.

You are most welcome. I knew it was a Lysimachia sp. hence the ? Pity it turned out to be L.. v.

The flowers and leaves look a bit large for L. vulgaris. Did you consider L. punctata? See the following snip from Weakley's key to distinguish between the two. You'll need to click on the snip to enlarge it for viewing.

Thanks for the info. I took a deeper dive based on your suggestion, but it led me back to my original conclusion - that among the choices presented, it’s L. vulgaris. l wasn’t able to go back and measure flowers (or take better pics); but the 2 photos I posted clearly show the whirled 3-leaf arrangement which seems to be characteristic of L. vulgaris. L. punctata has 4 leaves. Also, based on comparing an assortment of photos of the three plants, the L. vulgaris leaves look stiffer and glossier than those of the other two. Finally, the L. v produces flowers from each leaf grouping on stems that are about the same length as the leaves. I think it’s a beautiful plant and am sad that I can’t use it in my garden, but, your response and peren.all’s have started me thinking about other Lysimachia that could serve my needs. I currently have a large stand of gooseneck loosestrife from a patch that my mom wanted cleared out of one of her beds. Its aggressiveness is an asset where I have it and it looks great.

Unless someone comes up with a better possibility, I’m going with L. vulgaris. Thanks again for everyone‘s help.
