Area Rugs... Help!

Back with rug advice! I couldn't delete my other post, so here I am. Switching gears.

New house. Going for a cottage design because my house feels "beachy" but I also like rustic looks. Our living room is 10 x 20 but I only have a small space where I'm putting the couch/TV. Half the living room is for lounging and the other half will be a play area for my LO.

Walls - White. Walls in the kitchen are a light blue. Only 8ft.
Flooring - Grey wood look (for real, it's like no one in this city believe in actual hardwood floors)
Lighting - Lots of windows but not full-on sun
Furniture - Mid-tone grey chaise sectional (on order) I know white and tan are preferred for this look but ... kids lol!

I've read articles on how to make rooms appear larger. Light colours, wall to wall rug (I'm thinking 9x10? Couch is 8ft long, room is 10ft wide), small patterns or no pattern at all.

Ideas? (Will post pics of my space in the AM)

Pics will definitely help. In the meantime, what's your budget? Are you looking for wool, synthetic, jute?

Budget - Not a whole lot. $300 max. Furnishing an entire house (we had no furniture lol!)

I would love a natural fiber rug like jute or sisal but it's not practical since I have kids and cats. Pics are flooring and wall colour which mostly shows blue but has a grey tone in certain lights. And my phone takes crappy pics.

Home Interiors & Jodie White, Sorry guys. I'm new to this. Obviously, i need to create an Ideabook! I tend to go more towards muted brown, red, yellow/gold, rust colors (in past), but open to other somewhat neutral palettes. I actually love the console, but was considering an antique cream color (if I could make that work?). My tastes tend to be traditional, rustic, a little farmhouse (pottery barn, restoration hardware, ballard designs) but with so many current needs, all those in a TIGHT budget! Aktillery9, i do like all of those looks. My husband did just tell me, due to wiring, there is chance we may not be able to mount on flat wall as i hoped, so i may be forced to go back to corner console again. :( When I get a chance, I'll post some of my fav looks.

It really depends on your style, your rooms (open concept or not), how much color and pattern you like, and so forth. For instance, in a monochromatic scheme, or MCM, yes, you’d want them to match more. For traditional, not match, but tie-in somehow. Certain boho, not match at all. Etc. I look at rugs as art, rather than utilitarian and just something to walk on, so mine are chosen in that sense. I have rugs in every room, based on that room, even if it’s not matchy with another nearby. But many people prefer rugs to be more function/stay in the background, and that’s great. It’s really personal preference. If you’re worried about clashing, or don’t feel comfortable with trying to mix and match, look at rug collections on rug sites ... such as Rugs Direct, Incredible Rugs, etc. They put these collections from one brand together, and most are very cohesive. You could do two different rugs in your living and dining, and a solid in the entry, for example.

I made this on a design tool for your room. It shows a rug on the medium to smaller size with the dark hardwoods and white tile you talked about. I think because you have hardwood it may be better not to cover them all up which would give for a better design with more textures in my opinion. Hope this helps!

The first thing I would do is get thet TV off the FPit is hung way too high and it looks like a heatilator type FP so the ventting of it will ruin the TV. Try thinking of the FP as one focal point and the TV either wall monted on an articulating arm beside the TV or that TV on the wall beside the kitchen doorway and rearrange the furniture For us a to scale floor plan is always helpful showing all the measurements , windows doorways etc The to scale plan is a great addition to the pics it helps getting a feel for the space . For sure at least give us the measurements of the room

save until you can afford to do it right if you cant afford a nice rug now. its cheaper to buy one nice thing than something that wont last as long. especially with a little a nice soft rug would be great. i just bough a much smaller rug and couldnt find anything under $100 that wasnt like sandpaper or so thin as to be pointless, and then you need some kind of pad underneath...

I've found plenty of rugs for under $300. Not everything has to cost an arm and a leg. I can afford more, but I simply don't want to spend any more than that.

I didn't know I had to spend $1000 in order for it to be done "right." eyeroll

ANYWAYS ... I'm looking for ideas of what kinda of rugs, colours, patterns etc. I should be looking for then I'll find something to match on my own. If you can't help with that, please move on.

I had the same dilemma. I looked for rugs for a long time, and I could not decide, and we may be moving, so I got a “Rug right now” instead of a forever rug.

It is on the thin side but I bought a pad only because we sit on the floor sometimes. The price was really great. It has cream, off-white, a tad bit of grey and doesn’t show dirt or dog hair. But I still vacuum lol!

I ended up loving this rug and am buying a runner, too.

I cannot remember what size you needed..

    These are great options. Thanks!

I like this one, but don't have a clue whether it matches with what I'm going for. And/or if it might be too "busy." I've never done rugs before so I'm clueless haha!

    Odd. Let's try again.

No I mean the pics of your room are not showing up. That’s a great rug, but you were concerned whether or not it went with what you are trying to do. I didn’t see the pics of your room and I think they were at the top of this post? But I like the rug.

Oh gotcha. I have not posted a pic of my space. It's a write off from the move. TOMORROW lol! I did just take a pic but there's way too much stuff in the way for it to be a good visual.

You need to measure carefully first. You can typically find an 8x10 or 9x12. You want a minimum of 1 foot from all the walls, and your furniture needs to be all on the rug, or all the front legs on the rug. Wait until you have your sectional in the space so you know exactly what color gray it is and how it fits in the room. With gray floors and gray furniture, you need something else for the rug. Try a small patterned rug to hide stains - maybe deeper blues to tie in with your kitchen walls.

Alright. Best I could do haha! New couch is going where the one in the pic is. 3 seater with chaise which will be on the door side. The TV stand is getting new legs. Lower, hairpin, as I don't want the TV blocking my passthrough. This was a foyer table at my old house so I'm just "repurposing" it.

I could arrange it a million different ways but I don't want my daughter's toys strewn in the middle of the living space so she has her own play corner (to the right of the cat tree)

I'd stay away from a fully gray rug. You don't want your whole space to end up looking like a black and white picture! Lowering the console is a great idea. I would keep the legs at 8 to 10 inches max so the t.v. is below the pass through. How do you feel about something like this? It has the beachy aqua and coral colors in it.

After seeing more photos of the space, I would not use a rug under the sectional. It is really a walkway between the spaces. I would use a rug in your entryway alcove, and another rug on the back side of the room for your child's play area - Maybe a round one. After the sectional comes you, look for a long narrow coffee table, or maybe two smaller round tables or ottomans to act as a coffee table. It looks like you will also need another end table with lamp or a floor lamp.

I completely agree with katinparadise, don’t do a natural. Use the rug as a statement piece, I think a rug with a bluer tone (s) are the way to go. Have you tried looking at Wayfair? Tones of amazing well constructed rugs will very fair prices. Look luck!!

@calidesign I like that idea! A round rug in her area would look really good. Right now it's just a blank slate.

Definitely going to get some tables in there and a floor or table lamp. As you said, we are waiting on the couch to "finish" the space. See what kind of room we have to work with. It's not big or overbearing because we knew the space was small.

LOVE WAYFAIR! I've already got 2 end tables for our bedroom, and our new comforter from there. I'm waiting on my bed frame to come back in stock to order. Definitely my "go to" place for pretty much anything now.

It has often been suggested here to order a rug in the smallest size available to see if you like the colors, texture, etc... It's easy to return. Then if you like it, order the large size you actually need for the room.

Check out esalerugs.com. They have free shipping and free returns.

I would not use a rug with your furniture arrangement. The space is too small and how you need to use it. I would accent your sofa and chaise with print decorator pillows for beachy, adds more color, interesting, adds life. Beautiful color combos out there. If you have old pillows, you can order zippered pillow covers. Very affordable.

How about an 8x10 or 5 x 7 rug for your daughter's play space? A child's table and chairs for coloring, crafting. If there is space, a bookcase storage unit in her space for storing play things etc. , some toys.

Thanks! I'm definitely considering a rug just in her space. I think it would flow better for sure. I do plan on getting her a small table/chairs and we have a bookshelf on order that I've decided to put in her space for her toys.

There are all kinds of nice looking bins and baskets for her in discount stores and online discount. I would plan the storage bins, where they will be going in the bookcase, which helps keeping kids things orderly. It will look nice even from your breakfast/dining area.

She might be ok with putting things away : ) You could even label the bins.

    Look at Ruggable (their rugs can be washed). An 8’ X 10’ is $399 and a 6’ x 9’ is $299.

With a gray sectional and gray floors I think your room could use a little color, so I’m showing you this one...

It could definitely use some colour! Grey sectional, grey floor, and white walls. I NEED colour in my life haha!

Your floors can read a little busy so I'd avoid anything that mimics the movement of the wood grain. Either a print or something that reads as a solid would work better, IMO. The lighter aqua you posted would read like a solid and let you add lots of patterns in your pillows. Rugsusa.com lets you upload a picture of your space and try out different rugs.

Alright!! Now that I have my life somewhat in order lol! This is going to be long so I apologize in advance. I'm thinking I would still like to put a wall-to-wall rug in the "living" space to define and separate. I'm really hesitant to put a carpet in the "play" area because my LO is messy! I can see all sorts of bad stuff happening lol! But I'm still open to suggestions.

I got sick of her toys everywhere so I took the cube storage out of her room and put it in the living room. I'm happy with it.

Couch will still be a while yet (on order) but it will be placed in the same spot, in front of the window. Not ideal, but it was either that or the TV. I wanted to separate living and play and this was the best way to do that. Couch is a chaise sectional. Front door is annoying because it faces the street with no walkway. Driveway is on the side of the house where most people will enter, so it's just wasted space to me. But it is what it is!

This cat tree is going to be the death of me lol! No, I cannot put it anywhere else in the house. It's probably not going to stay in that exact spot, but somewhere around there. The canvas painting is not going to stay either. I just unpacked it and placed it there lol! Anyways, this is about rugs!

And curtains. I live on a corner lot on a busy street so privacy is key. I am keeping the sheer curtains on the big window and adding curtains. I don't want them just hanging there as we won't actually be closing them. They are just to add a bit of extra privacy and character. I'm planning on tying them the same way the curtains are by the cube storage. Also to note, I DO have all new curtain rods on order. The existing white curtains were left with the house so I'm just using what I have at this point while I figure out what to go with.

I've also added pictures of the space where you can see all windows. I'm not sure how to decide colours for these. Do I stick with the same curtains for ALL windows or go with the same set for both of the smaller windows and a different set for the big window? I absolutely need curtains where the dining table is because the sun shines in there right at dinnertime. I'm not a fan of blinds.

Please don't suggest I move any furniture around. It's not going to happen. I've figured out every arrangement, every angle, and this is the best way the space works for us.

I guess I'm just going to add that I'm looking for advice overall LOL!

    Rugs
    Curtains
Do I put side tables anywhere? Just 1? None?
I wouldn't mind a coffee table but I feel the space is too small.

Added a picture facing the TV. Blank space to the left. I'm also trying to figure out how to hide these cords on the right. I'm hoping to one day get an electrician in here to place a plug behind the TV right where I need it LOL! I built my last home so I planned for these things. TV placements, plug placements. Having things existing has been tough to manage #firstworldproblems LOL! I also need some sort of lighting in here! I have a plug on the side of the couch closest to the front door, by the chair in my daughter's play space, and beside the built-in bookshelf to the left of the TV.

The black thing is a sub. I'm considering just removing it because it's driving me crazy! The TV table was a repurposed table from the foyer in my last house. It had a tall, square base that I replaced with hairpin legs. I needed the TV to come down so that it blocked less of the passthrough.

My house isn't picture perfect and I'm okay with that. It might not work for everyone, but it works for us. I just like to reuse where I can and not spend money when I don't have to.

Wow, your daughter's play area is looking tidy and great! Very nice!

Having a sectional, you will have space for a coffee table. It will be functional for all of you. Very useful for food & drinks, games etc. I would place the sectional side that will be at the window, in the center of the window.

A side table might be useful at the sectional arm, near the entry door

I would wait until the sectional arrives to choose a coffee table and a side table if needed.

I know you have changed the TV stand with hairpin legs. to lower the TV even lower, to avoid covering the open window space.... Just a thought that would be very inexpensive is .... to change the legs to 2"x2" straight legs using a piece of lumber. Or... you can also use PVC & decide how to mount it to the bottom. Paint them the color of the unit.

hi... I haven't read. Seeing pass-through behind tv, what about covering / to smooth the appearance with a good match to the paint: with some shade, or curtains? not so it'd look busy...

Sectional is right hand facing so as to divide the space between the entry and living area. It is not reversible. In hindsight, it also would have been good to put it left facing as to act as a divide between the play area and living space. But I can't change it now haha!

I already spent the money on the hairpin legs so I'm not up for changing that. It's a bit inconvenient that the TV still covers the passthrough, but any lower and you'll be looking down at it. Right now one is looking directly at it while sitting on the couch. It took some convincing with my husband to even get it as low as it is haha! I do plan on centering the new couch on the window. Otherwise it would drive me crazy!

The passthrough doesn't really bother me. I assumed they put it in because it helps to open the space. The rest of the home is very closed off (bathroom, bedrooms etc. so just a hall with a bunch of doors) and this is the only "open concept" space. If it were me I wouldn't have put that wall up at all and just created a huge island instead, but it's clearly a load bearing wall, hence why it has to be there. On the other side I plan to have decorative accents on the shelf so you can't see the back of the TV from the kitchen.

I did consider hanging something from the passthrough but now I'm thinking that might be too "busy" looking if you're sitting on the couch looking through it.

… the busy thought - seeing the kitchen is busy also...haha ;)

but I meant a clean look and great match with paint color.
