Painting a fireplace
Comments (3)An old project of mine seems similar to yours (the seat area in front at least). My brick was multi-colored red/brown/grey and didn't go with the soft retro look I wanted. It was alot of work but worth it. Here is a photo. Tons of coats (I think four) and lots of smashing the brush into the grouted areas over and over. It was a long time ago so I'd have to think about what I did in what order. And yes -- once painted it is VERY difficult to go back to brick but is is possible. Someone else may chime in....See More90’s Fireplace remodel design dilemma
Comments (12)I would remove the existing pillars and mantel, they look too crowded against the windows. I would install a clean and simple modern tile around the fireplace. I think you could pull off the TV mounted once you get the pillars and mantel out, install a lower ledge to help protect the TV from the heat of the working fireplace. Lowering the ledge/mantel and with today's TV mounts should allow the TV to be positioned easier for viewing. Do your research on TV mounts, most of todays TV's are super light but block for it in the wall if necessary, particularly if you think you will be moving t he arm mount around often. You will get your depth from the TV and the ledge mantel so dont worry about creating more with trims and moldings. Best of luck!...See MoreGonna be time to build a fire!
Comments (32)Enjoy your fire! I would love one, but don't want to suck the heat up the flu. For once, the weather forecasters were correct. They predicted 8-12" of snow! Well, we got it, and are still getting it, and that is after it rained all day yesterday! Still under a winter storm warning. It's 29°f and wind chill makes it feel like 16°, according to my phone. We seldom get as much as predicted, so I really wasn't expecting it! Amylou, I need to find that channel! You said YouTube, so I will have to go searching. We have cut the "cable" dropping DirectTV, and are using the Fire Stick and over the air antenna....See MoreCould use some eyes on kitchen layout
Comments (1)A few pictures of what we have now, layout will be similar. Wide galley kitchen with breakfast nook at one end by the backyard and door to garage at the other end. We're blowing out the wall above the counter next to the cooktop/brick. So the kitchen will be partially open to the living room. And you'll be able to see out the dining room window which has an ocean/mtn view. Laundry is hiding behind the pantry right now. Will replace with front loaders and want to build a cabinet with doors that tuck in so the machines can be hidden. We've got a peninsula right now that prevents me from being able to reach the dishwasher from both sides, so instead of a peninsula, hoping to add a bit of cabinetry to the end of the run. Glass door will be turned into a window to match the one on the other side of the middle picture window. Kitchen fireplace - we'll remove the break hearth that sticks out. And then debating tiling over the brick or painting it...depends on what finishes we chose. Would like to use the hole for small appliance or shelves for cookbooks maybe? This doorway goes to the living room and might get a little tight if I build out that fireplace area too much. We are removing side door. Refrigerator will be paneled and move over next to the oven. Sofits will be removed and cabinets will go up to ceiling. The kitchen will have an 8' ceiling and the wall where the tv is now will be opened up. The counter will continue out toward the living room for a couple chairs....See MoreKristin S
