Spanish Style Home Help
Hi!
i recently purchased my first home and its spanish style. I love the charm of spanish homes but feel that this one is lacking on the exterior currently as is.
was wondering if you had any suggestions for changes that arent too expensive...
like painting exterior white?
changing the pathway in the front
should i put shutters instead of the awnings? Will this make it look less boxy?
garden/greenery ideas
should i remove those little arches by the roof?
any suggestions are welcome!

Help choose trim color for Spanish Style House

I know colors look different in the deck and on a computer screen but I'm noticing the color sample (color matched by Sherwin Williams) on the window looks very different and not what I expected. Comments (13)My question to you would be why you want to do this to that house. Is it justified in terms of the neighborhood home values? A gf of mine did this to her home, but it was worth, maybe $1.5M, on a nice large lot in a great school district, in a HCOLA area. The home recently appraised for over $3M. So, she got the value of the $1M remodel. BTW, her home is small, around 2,200sf. Depending on where you live, you are looking at a LOT of money. I would be asking experts (realtors) in your area what kind of investment in the exterior would add value to the home. Provide pics of a room or rooms you want to start with and create an ideabook with inspiration pics. Comments (11)this isn't a spanish style home. you have some arches on the back addtion part. that's it. I mean, it's like walking around w/castanets on your fingers while wearing blue jeans and a tshirt, and calling yourself a flamenco dancer. no offense. If you want more spanish, get a spanish roof tile, get new windows for the front part, spanish style door, and a mediterranea landscape. see how they did this look? or this one. you'd have to stain that concrete driveway too But aside from that, I'd just go w/the vintage mid century look. Like this one: (is this home up in the north part of LA? montecito hgts? Lincoln park area? looks like it. ) First thing I'd do is paint. from the pic it looks like a greenish white. why do you want fencing on top of the wall? Have you checked w/the city first to see if it's allowed? if it is, ask about the spacing of the fencing. sometimes you need a gap in between the planks. If you must do fencing, then make it this style: I'd paint the cinder block wall a darker color and then do your vinyl wood look fencing on top of that. 4 years agoIn general, I'm not a fan of small stepping-stone walks, but especially for the main entrance. They seem so temporary and primitive looking ... which does not equate with the house, IMO. You'd be better off with a hard surface walk but definitely, with a new configuration for the path. If redoing it, I'd also enlarge the stoop a little and get rid of the level change where it meets the walk. This could be done by gradually raising the grade of the walk as it nears the stoop.
The present walk route crowds one by closeness with the house and insists on pinching the landscape bed between the walk and house. If it were to leave the stoop at a diagonal it could create a greater sense of spaciousness when using and a better sense of welcoming on the approach.

I do agree that it needs a front path more equal to the value of the house itself.
I suspect the rounded awnings were used to repeat the arched niche surrounding the window of the room to the left. Is that room the dining room?
It is not uncommon for Spanish style houses to have rectangular windows with some arched windows It is not a problem that you need to disguise with current awnings. . A more common type of awning is what I read is called spear awning.
Usually they are dark green or ashy brown.The current awnings remind me of a commercial building. Most people use awnings only on southern and western exposures.
My other critique involves the niche. I wonder if that was once a much larger window. Here are some examples of the window filling the niche.
Windows or French doors to the right of the entrance. ^^

This one also has the spear awnings. Notice the little arches on the left side of the upper story. They are like yours. I hope you do not remove them.
If you look at the second house I posted you can see a rectangular window or doors put in the same width of the niche leaving a half moon above. If you wanted to make any changes I would do something like that. At least paint the niche the color of the body of the house.
I would not add shutters to your house. If you feel you must have them they should be wood color to match the front door.
Current landscaping is not bad but it leaves room for improvement.HU-420481507
