Comments (19)Topping for Squirrelheaven. I asked her to switch the colors behind bookcase with the wall color to see what that would look like. So the Adobe color would stay behind the shelves of the bookcases and a lighter tan color would be on the walls. Any opinions if you think that would work? Comments (36)loribee and Connie, thank you for the kind words. Connie, I just spent some lovely time on your blog, totally captivated by your new kittens and your roses. (I'm a new native gardening.) I love seeing what people have done with customizing other pieces but we're just not DIY folks at all. Hubby has ZERO interest and my abilities are limited. So mostly we either have to buy ready to go or pay someone to do things. One other reason to replace these is that I can then move some of them into my office which has shorter shelves and into hubby's office which also has shorter shelves. We need a lot of bookspace. les - no, the store won't come out here and it's not custom as in them building various sizes. Plus the store is an hour away. The fitting is pretty basic - I have 67" on one side of the fireplace and 73" on the other. All bookcases are 12" deep and there is 33" and 46" wide one to be used. So 12" + 46" = 58 with 9" left on one side and 15" left on the other because of course the fireplace isn't in the middle of the wall. :) Those gaps are too wide on either side of the fireplace to look decent and if I use these cases, I can't really make something to fit the small space and match. If I use the pine ones I have more widths to choose from, 24, 30, 36, 48 so I could do a 24 and 30 on one side and 30 and 30 on the other side which, when I add in the 12" depth for the cases from the other wall, gives me an inch to spare. But I need to figure out the heat registers and look at the case bottoms better today to see if we can cut the fronts for registers or mount them on bases of some kind. I tell you, I'm exhausted by all of this. Watching them demo the ceramic tile for the wood floor is going to be a piece of cake after this. :) The other think you might consider, and I dont know for sure what would be cheaper, would be to have the bookcases made of stain-grade plywood, or paint grade that you do in a deep black brown, or a white to match the fireplace. I spent another couple of hours looking at the various manufacturers on the stores website and found a couple of entertainment units that should work. I'll ask about them when we go today. Hubby is picky. We need something for the TV, no problem, but then the 4 components (DVD, TiVo, subwoofer and CD player) need a space that is open on both the front and the back. He won't use glass or cloth doors and wants an open back. (We'll just cut what we need from the back if it doesn't come open.) But like I said, I think there are a few pieces that would work and the handyman came by last night and said that he could do the bridge stuff I wanted. It's the heat registers to solve now. And can I just say again, thank you to all of you who read and comment and hold hands through this process? Comments (7)Hello bcafe - I’m no pro, just offering my first impression. I agree with the others here; I like this mostly as is. I like the brick colors and style. I do admit that there’s something about the bookcase that is throwing me. Maybe it’s the size/proportion with the fireplace. Maybe if it came up to the ceiling?? I’m not sure. And I actually love the fireplace even in its current color. I don’t have any suggestions if you were to remove the bookcase. Maybe remove the doors and even up the depth to make it just shelves. Comments (31)@Paul F. - Are you changing your intended purpose for this room? There was no desk in your original design - it sounded like strictly a bedroom. Not clear on guest room or resident room - but only a bedroom. Now it sounds like you’re planning more uses for the room - combo bedroom / guest room / office? I like the multi use & also the desk plan you drew out. Not so fond of the mock up with screen that you just posted. I think with the corner desk plan you could sit at computer in boxers & not be concerned. If there’s no exterior landscape to soften the view, there are wonderful shades called top down / bottom up. They can cover 100% of window or any portion of top or bottom. They would look much nicer than that interior screen underneath the desk. I prefer the window seat at window or a desk at window with shelving / closets etc on either side & in all cases use the top down / bottom up shades. But, please do allow for a lounging spot for kitty whatever you do!...See Moregroveraxle

4 years agoWe're remodeling a room and adding a fireplace and low bookshelves along a 20ft long wall. It looks like the architect has proposed two sets of 7.5ft wide bookshelves and a 5ft wide fireplace. Now I'm wondering if I should revise that - I prefer the wider fireplace in the photo above. OTOH enlarging the fireplace will shrink the windows and force changes on the other side of the room, which has a symmetrical layout. Hmm...
And fwiw we're a two academic family in a small house, so our bookshelves will be overflowing. We've specified 12" deep for the bookshelves to minimize dusty shelves. But I love the cubbies/window seats in the OP's inspiration picture!

Are you going to use a sound bar? Is there enough room for that on the wall?

Our room will be 20x26 after removal of an existing wall. We have no other real living space so the TV does have to stay above the fireplace. Right now we have a large-ish TV that runs 49" in length so it could work w/a 5ft wide fireplace. But your sketch is appealing and even adding 1ft to make the fireplace 6ft wide gives us a bit more breathing space w/o sacrificing too much light.
The main point of our remodel is adding a master suite above this 20x26 space but I'm trying to eke as much as I can out of our budget to improve the first floor as well.

4 years agoI might consider not doing built ins at all. Maybe just place stained or painted chests on either side of the fireplace with windows above. That way you can have drawers or doors whatever you require for storage at a beach house.
