melamine vs wood for home office built in desk and cabinets

I’ve gotten several estimates for a built in bookshelves and desk for a home office, some from closet companies and a couple from local custom cabinet makers. The lowest estimate is from a local closet company and the highest estimate comes from California Closet and custom cabinet makers. There is a difference of about $5000 between the lowest and the highest. The cabinetmakers use wood, and the closet companies use melamine. From my google search, I got the impression that wood (I assume plywood) is not better than melamine, especially I want the built in to be white. All of the companies are well reviewed but I am not sure I know what questions to ask to really gauge quality. Is it better to go with wood anyways or should I just decide on design and price?
