Thanks, I think it MAY be lamb's quarters. I looked up some info and I guess it's edible...sorta of 'tastier' than spinach...and very nice sauteed in olive oil? I guess however that it can be easily confused with some other inedible plant, so I read that if I rub the leaves between my fingers and detect no strong odor, that it's indeed lamb's quarters and therefore ok to eat? I guess it develops purple flowers at some point which makes sense seeing as I saw hints of purple in the veins. And yes Missingtheobvious, I was indeed thinking of pokeweed. I have such strong memories of that as a kid!

WELL...last night someone on name that plant forum indicated that it was called Yellowrocket, which led to finding that it is probably a very close relative of Yellowrocket: Wild Radish. Whis is a very close relative to Wild Mustard :-) The only reason it can't be Yellowrocket is because the stems and leaves have tiny hairs, which indicates it is Wild Radish. However. I have seen pics of Wild Radish now on Google Images that don't look like this plant, and some that show Yellowrocket looking dead-on accurate, save for the leaves. Ha. At any rate, I'm pulling them up...tis' not to be... Thanks so much for your help, timbu and fammsimm. Now I am also familiar with two other kinds of weeds, so if I spot them, I'll know right away :-) Joanna

Good going Ron B. I might test your skills when I can snap a photo of a newly spotted purple flowering shrub adjacent to my yard. You are really an asset to the forum!

It's Euphorbia peplus - Petty Spurge - a very common annual weed here. Pull it up before it sets seed. Every plant in that picture would be classed as a weed here except the Poppy centre left with the seed pod. Directly below the spurge is Hairy Bittercress looking innocent now but don't let it seed. Top right and left you have Sonchus aka Sow Thistle.
