Small Girl Bedroom With No Closet- Floor Plan and Decor Advice Please!

Hello all!

We just bought a house and I'm trying to figure out a good layout and design for my daughter's room. She has a pottery barn full size loft bed with a fixed ladder plus a desk/ dresser underneath. See pic. We are limited on the orientation of the bed as the dresser drawers pull out from the end of the bed and because we can't reposition the ladder. She loves this bed so we are going to keep it. The room is small (9'10 by 11') and doesn't have a closet so we also need to incorporate a wardrobe. I was thinking of flanking the window wall with two wardrobes and a window seat for storage, but I don't know if this will make the room look too cramped. I also heard that window seats often go unused so maybe its a waste of space, even though we could have storage underneath.

What are your thoughts on the layout? Do you have any genius ideas of how to better orient the room.

As for decor, she is 7 years old going on a teenager. Very artistic and likes moodier, edgier looks. She asked for a black room, lol. She likes the inspiration photo below. I was thinking maybe a dark charcoal or gray blue, and then using white wainscoting to lighten up the room. Or maybe I should do shiplap or some other interesting texture? We will have mid-tone brown wood floors. I've included a floor plan and the 3D image (which is not indicative of style at all).

ANY ADVICE IS MOST APPRECIATED. You guys are the best and have helped me so much thus far as we navigate this new house! :)

You have limited options, but I'd suggest putting the wardrobe only on the right side of the window with the larger wall space. Leave the other side open and perhaps put in either open shelving or just a large piece of art. Extend the bench seat all the way to the left of the window and add more cabinets/drawers underneath.

Why not black, tatts? Too hard to cover if you change your mind?

CSparkles, you could have two of those hanging rods. Ikea has a lot of clever wardrobe systems, including Algot that can affix to a wall. They also have smaller armoires than their Pax which are just too big, imo, for small rooms with 8' ceilings.

I read the other responses, but this is what I would do... I would change out the blue color, maybe a limish green or a blue than is more similar to the blue in the bottom butterfly wings on the quilts or the background in one of your pictures. Obviously, not that bright, but more in that color tone. Painting the trim would make it more girlish, but I think you could make some other changes before making that decision. If you have it in your budget to buy fabric, I would cover your beds in a solid color fabric to make the quilts pop more. Try hobby lobby for some cute wall decor. Last year, I found an adorable glittery wood wall letters that said "kisses" in the valentines section. It goes perfectly in my 5 year olds room. I would hang something like that above each of their beds. The dresser needs something cute on it. A little grouping of bears, blocks, picture frames or just something more decorative. You could paint some butterflies on one wall with just a few small pints of sample paint. You can get these at Sherwin Williams for $5 each in their cans designed to help you decide on a color and you can mix them in any of their colors. It would add a lot of pizzazz to the room, and a butterfly shape is pretty simple shapes put together. I would then add some cute basic curtains, maybe in a solid color. Good Luck, I'm sure they already love it, we always overanalyze these rooms, and I am sure they love it just the same now as they would later.

My inclination would be to paint the walls bright white and let the rest of the accents be the color players. White is the backdrop I've often seen, or been drawn to, when I look up bohemian pictures. I'd also put a really large area rug in the room that only left a few inches of bare floor around the perimeter of the room. This way, no matter which way the room is arranged, the rug is always the right size. If your daughter is anything like I was, the room will be rearranged many times during her teen years! : ) You could still layer her little rug over the large rug for her reading nook. You might like to plug the room into homestyler.com for working on the layout. Your kitties might be disappointed, but muscles with thank you. : ) If you save a snapshot of the homestyler layout to your computer, you can upload it onto here using the photo link. That would allow us to see the plan overview, and will make it easier for us to help with the arrangement.

I’d find a fabric that you love with your wall color....and start there. Or, find a large area rug with that color in it as your inspiration. A Persian style, perhaps, that includes other colors that can be picked out for fabrics to dress your windows, your bed, and seating in front of your beautiful fireplace. I feel an elegant style emerging..... I know that Houzz designers will come up with idea boards that will inspire you! A lovely room!

This must be a really old house if it doesn’t have closets in the bedrooms! What type of window is in the room (for example: single/double-hung, casement, slider, etc.)? And what are the measurements of it?

Colorwise I think her color choice should be honored. It’s just paint.

If she loves black I would say go for it like stated its just paint. As for the storage IMO the closet space wins IMO right now if she has lots of clothes

Sammy it is an old house! Window is 57” (4’9”) wide, 56” (4’8") height, 26” (2’2") from ground, 18 1/2" from ceiling, 40 1/2" (3’ 4.5”) from one wall and 21" (1’9”) from other wall.

Thanks for confirmations on black. I just didn't want to make it look that much smaller, but you are right...I should honor her choice.

I am toying with the idea of open storage as Tartan suggested as well as extending the window seat to the wall as Sabrina said. I am highly nervous of the room looking disorganized because of the open storage. :) Here is a look at that concept:

  • Elaine Ricci

Not a pro. Black will make the room seem smaller. That said, if she wants black, white furniture might be in order, to provide a contrast. Also, painting the ceiling as a starry night sky, using glow-in-the-dark paint for the stars, would be an impressive touch.

So, there are 6 drawers in the end of the bed. What if you put two deep ones under a window seat for shoe storage? Perhaps a clever carpenter could turn one of the sets of 3 around so they can be opened from the interior of the bed/desk? Panels of beadboard are available to do the fill in to cover the "hole" left when they move to the other side. Then maybe the loss of the 1 small drawer wouldn't be so bad if you wanted to turn that end of the bed toward a wall.

decoenthusiaste, love the idea of maybe turning the drawers inward because I could change the orientation of the room. A friend suggested the same, but I never thought of actually altering the bed. I do worry that it could affect the integrity/ safety of the piece. Also, I'm trying to envision her pulling out her desk chair everyday to access the dresser drawers. Definitely something to think about!

I don't know your budget but if custom solutions are an option, you could look into a closet company for some ideas and estimates. Just make sure they offer versatile options as her wardrobe will change considerably in the next ten years. As for the open wardrobe potentially looking cluttered, I agree. One inexpensive solution could be to hang a curtain from the ceiling the same colour as the wall.

  • Sammy

Nope, don’t alter the bed. Besides, your original floor plan works well enough. And I think you could find happiness with an IKEA closet system (they have closed storage too, right? Doors are necessary to keep the room neat-looking and to keep the dust off the clothes!) or similar on the window wall. Whatever you do, make sure you keep the window clear for emergency egress!!

Yes, Ikea has closed storage as well. I had their Pax armoires but found them much too big in our bedroom with 8 ft ceilings. They now have shorter and shallower options. But yes, lots of open and closed wardrobe storage options. Essential point about keeping the window clear, Sammy!

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>I’m jumping in to reinforce a point, and add a few new ideas:

    - I agree dark charcoal or even black walls will be gorgeous, especially with white furniture and a few SOFT accents; the fluffy ottoman or floor pillow is perfect example of how to use smaller accent pieces to soften a very bold room.
    - Consider adding soft, white window sheers to continue the softening effect, but avoid blocking the lovely natural light coming into this small bedroom.
    - Ask your daughter to select another bold color - whatever her next favorite might be after black

...IKEA has a very shallow shoe cabinet that is secured to the wall, plus serves a great little shelf on top for displaying small items on top.
...consider adding a mirror to the back of the door, or to whatever closet system you decide on to help reflect light in the room and give it a larger feel.
Best of luck, and hope you’ll share photos of the room once it’s completed. I’m sure it’ll turn out Fabulous and your daughter will love it!

I'm not personally a fan of open storage. I need it all behind doors...

I would do the Ikea Pax closets...they have all sorts of drawers/inserts to help with organization. You can plan what to buy in the comfort of home and just choose the finish...you can even order and pick up (or have delivered for, think, 50 dollars.

I agree with you about the window seat...it's useful storage whether it gets used as a seat or not.

I guess, we think alike and I would do exactly what you're thinking of doing....2 closets and a window seat. Don't give up any wall space for "decor". It's less important than storage.

Don't forget above the doorway and window for an extra bit of storage in the way of shelves and baskets for rarely used items.

Sure...it will be a tad cramped, but kids rarely notice that kind of thing anyway.

As a young teen, our daughter wanted to paint her room royal blue with varying sized circles of neon colors splashed around. She did it herself, with help from a friend, and it looked great. I told her she had to repaint it herself to off white when she moved out. She honored her promise, though it took three coats...
I think your daughter's inspiration is more charcoal than black. She'll probably love it for a long time, since she chose it.
Her window seat was toy storage, then storage for sporting equipment and out of season stuff. Wish I had thought of converting it to drawers. Stuff was always jumbled and lost in the big chest/ seat.

So, today I went up into my little hideout/study/tv nook/craft cave to measure the built-ins I had made for it many years ago (I’m hoping to be able to use them in a different room), and it just so happens that at 9’3” by 11’6”, that little room (it used to be unfinished attic space) is nearly identical in size and shape to your daughter’s room. And while I was up there, I imagined what it would be like if it had a super-cool loft bed with desk and dresser underneath...which brings me to this:

How strongly do you feel about keeping that loft bed that only yesterday I said was so awesome? I mean, I don’t have to go on to the PB Teen website to know that it wasn’t inexpensive or that you’d be sick at the thought of it not being able to be used in this house or that your daughter would probably cry if you told her that. But, seriously, on a scale of one to ten, with one being “Not at all so don’t ever mention it again,” and ten being “Extremely willing and thank GOD you suggested it, Sammy, ‘cause I hate that thing and I’ve been looking for the justification to get rid of it,” how willing to part with it are you? I ask this because, honestly, it’s just too big for that room. Now, if you’re open to it, I can show you the plan I came up with, but it’s based on having a regular full-sized bed (and an awesome light fixture like in the inspo pic that isn’t possible with the loft bed, not to mention a real, adult-sized closet capable of holding an eventual teenage girl’s clothes that also isn’t possible with the loft bed.)

    Holding my breath...

Sammy, I’m so sorry for the delay! I worked super late this evening. The bed is definitely too big for this room, hence the problem. I agree. Obviously my daughter loves that it is a loft but it also offers a large u-shape workspace. My daughter spends most of her time drawing, sculpting and doing crafts so the workspace is very valuable to her. However, I’d love to hear your idea. Thank for being so respectful of what we want. :). Now I’m very excited to see what you came up with.

I have done built-in wardrobes (PAX from IKEA) in my daughters room and she also has a loft bed. Although it's an IKEA one that is open below. Her room is 10x12 roughly. I would do closed doors on the wardrobes. The mess would overwhelm me otherwise. I would consider doing mirrored doors at least on the ones across from the door into the room. It will reflect light and make it seem bigger. My daughter have some in the middle.

Mine also has a darker wall color with her black bed. She loves black too. Here's a picture of when we had to replace the floors due to a broken plumbing fitting.

I'm standing where the bed sits and the door into the room is to the right.

Here is a picture before we painted and before the new floors. You can see part of the bed in the mirror.

Lyfia, is her loft bed a full or a twin? I think the problem is my daughter has a full. Also do your dimensions include the closet space? Maybe we need to sell the full and buy a twin. What do you do for sleepovers with a twin loft bed? Thank you so much for posting pics...so helpful!

  • tfitz1006

I wonder if she would consider Hale Navy. So pretty with white.

  • lyfia

Her loft bed is a full and to be honest is too big for the space. A twin would be better, but she has so many pillows and animals in there that sleeping space is more like a twin. For sleepovers we do a queen blow up mattress on the floor. There is just enough space in front of the closets or we can turn it so part is under the loft bed, but need to remove furniture to do that.

Her closets are not part of the dimensions so she does have more room than you do. When I converted it from a reach in closet to the wardrobes we actually gained 8" in the length of her room. It doesn't appear too cramped with her full bed when she has the curtains under it open since there are no built in items and I can walk upright under it without hitting my head. She has a small desk and a book shelf under it now and where the bookshelf shows in the picture is a reading nook with a bean bag.

I think the IKEA PAX closets would be a great solution. We used them in our last house (with 8 foot ceilings) and had a contractor "build them in" on a short platform and added crown molding at the top. Just my 2 cents. I like both plans you've come up with (full storage & just storage on the right). I think you could start with less storage, see how it goes, and upgrade as needed.

I've been thinking about your drawing. The full bed looks " tight" to us, but I am guessing it's perfect for your daughter. No matter the size of her room, that's her " space" that she enjoys and uses.
I'd keep the bed for now. it can always be changed later, when she decides it's time for a change.
I would do the ikea closets and a storage bench under the window. the measurements are just about perfect for a 19 on the left, and a 40 on the right. With molding.
the beauty of ikea is it can change as she ( and her clothing collection) grows. Today, she needs a bit of low hanging rods, and some drawers. in 6 years, she'll probably want some of those rods moved up. some doubled up. 15 minute job. plus 3 or 4 hours at ikea, exploring options... :)

Keep the bed since it works for her. You can change the space years down the road when it becomes a guest room. I like the window seat and wardrobes.

I liked the other option of the bed near the window, with wardrobes on the door wall but the need to have access to the window in an emergency is more important.

Those Pax wardrobes are fabulous storage options. I'd go with white, for sure. The Pax didn't work in our bedroom but I think it's partly because they were at the entrance of the room. Surrounding the window as you have it in your layout would work heaps better. They look great in Lyfia's pics. I'm also short and feel claustrophobic with tall furniture so that's my bias.
