Need help with kitchen in this open concept kitchen/living room
Comments (18)Mike, you have a nice space there. Lots of light and plenty of cabinets for a first home! I think with a good paint job, your cabinets will look very nice. My only suggestion is that if budget allows, you do the floor after the paint job (less prep of the floors!). However, if there is only enough money for one of the three at this time, I think you are right in doing the floors before moving in. Rantontoo's point about the floor being raised is a valid one. I am sure the installers will tear out the laminate, but nonetheless make sure there is enough room under the dishwasher. You could box it in and then if it ever needs to be removed, ruin your new floors (pre or site finished). Also today's refrigerators are super sized and with a new floor, there could be a height issue as well....See MoreNeed help with living room decor. Room is open concept to kitchen
Comments (5)I would start out with a large, beautiful rug in warm colors (terracotta or red Oriental rug mixed with other colors. I feel sectionals often confine you in how to organize your room. I would choose a fabric couch in a neutral, not too dark color (not gray, which is on its way out and not a warm color), and add two chairs in a different color or at least a different material and style. Try to keep the height of these pieces similar. Two end tables in wood (they don't have to be the same, but make sure the heights are fairly similar and a metal and glass coffee table would look great, with table lamps or floor lamps even if you have overhead lighting, which is always harsh. Pick colors from the rug for pillows and you'll have a beautifully coordinated living space. Books, good paintings and some tall plants will add warmth and personality to your room. People too often don't add these elements and then wonder why their rooms look bare and cold. This may be more colorful than you want to go. and this is a small rug because there is carpeting underneath, but it gives you the idea of neutral furniture and how it can be made more lively with accessories, pillows, coffee table styling etc....See Moreneed help! hardwood or tile in open concept kitchen
Comments (32)see if SJ McCarthy can come in and comment. She is the flooring guru and I believe she is in Can. look her up, send her a message, and have give her a link to this dilemma. She'll pop over. I'm sure the two 'installers' you spoke to are not flooring refinishing experts. They are probably just flooring installers. Big difference. It's not cheaper. It's costs more to tear out and buy all new. And of course that's what they told you because they're the ones taking your money! You need someone who refinishes wood floors. nothing else. Call up a wood flooring refinisher. call in 2 or 3. Talk to someone who knows what they're doing, not some random flooring guy. new flooring. $5-$10 sq ft for wood flooring, solid or engineered. (yes there is cheaper, and it's crap) now add on about $4 a sq ft to install. don't forget new baseboards. demo all of the old stuff, prob $4 a sq ft. do the math. now, match up new flooring,,$5-7 sq ft for the new wood to lace in, few more bucks for labor, plus a few thousand to completely sand and stain everything at once. (I don't know what your sq footage is) it's cheaper to leave what's there, and pay to have it matched and redone. And, you get to keep your original floors and have them look brand new....See MoreSOS - Need Help With Furniture Layout - Open Concept Living/Kitchen
Comments (15)Hi @Allyson Jones, please consider the following arrangement of furnishings. This is meant to give you a lot of flexibility, more seating options for gatherings with family or friends. The carpet would need to be rotated one quarter turn every so many months so it wears out evenly given that you have traffic to the guests quarters. Do not be fret over empty walls. Empty space is very importance. Add only things that matter to you, that bring you joy, that tell the history of your family. Avoid home goods stores, all those cute items go out of style quickly. Keep only two of the stools. Endeavor to use the dining room table more. It is important for a family to turn off the tv and focus on each other. Use this plan to measure how the sofa unit should fit in the space. Use a glass coffee table to keep the space visually lighter. The chair in the corner can be a funky statement piece, either by its shape or color. If you do place a chair there, replace the light fixture currently in that corner with a floor low-wattage canister light on a timer, so it automatically turns on at night, and off a few hours after you go to sleep. Such lights, on the corner of a room, produce a very warm and inviting effect. I hope this helps....See Moredaisychain Zn3b
