Wall and cabinet colors for laundry room?

The laundry area in our new house needs cheering up. Not remodeling it but will get a new washer and dryer and want to paint the walls and cabinets. It's currently beige with a white ceiling. Any suggestions for a calm, pretty color scheme for a traditional home? The room gets sun all day and is very bright. Thank you Houzzers!

first thing I would add is a long shelf to go above the appliances (when you get your new ones), see some of the pics below. Or, if doing front loading, then build a countertop to go over both.

I added the long shelf on mine and love it. I also added a rail above to hang delicates and such. see how they've done here? top for folding and rail for hanging. for the 'back splash', you can jazz it up with a stencil, or paint or even some left over tile (you don't need much. check out craigslist for a few sq feet of marble tile or something cool)

i just saw a kitchen that was done in white cabs, countertops, but they painted the ceiling in the most beautiful shade of turquoise. it looked so good. perfect idea for a sunny laundry room

can't find a pic of it, but it resembled something like this one (just the ceiling. and you could do a satin, not glossy)

you could do greens or yellows,,,whatever you like. I think the white cabs w/the blue ceiling is great

you could also DIY some T&G on the ceiling

or, pick a great color for the cabstand bring in a matching light

if it's a small space, go bold w/the flooring. white subway tile is cheap and you can DIY

What colors are you using in the rest of the house? Since a laundry room is usually enclosed, you could have a bit of fun with it and use deeper, richer tones of whatever accent colors you're going to use elsewhere.

Hi katinparadise, the rest of the house is Boring Beige with white ceilings. The sellers repainted it just before they put it on the market. I doubt I will get around to repainting it this year but I can do the laundry room at least. I like your idea of richer shades. Any thoughts there?

BTW, the easy way to hang a wall cabinet is to screw a piece of wood to the wall. Almost any straight scrap you have lying around, a 2"x4" or whatever. Figure out where you want the bottom of your cabinet to be then draw a level line on the wall. Line the top of that piece of scrap wood up with your line and screw it, in several places, to the studs inside your wall. When you're done with that then you can just rest the cabinet on top of your scrap wood (slide if from side to side a bit if you wish) and practically hold the cabinet with one hand while it's being anchored to the wall. Only down side to this method is that it leaves you with some screw holes to repair...once the cabinet is installed and you remove the scrap wood yep, you've got some holes.

Most people like to match color and materials. People like continuity, so most people will tell you to match the color of the hall cabinets even if you don't match their style. I'm not so rigid, and I think any room with a doorway, even if it doesn't have a door, can have different colors and flooring. It would be helpful to see a photo of the hallway from the laundry room, and perhaps from the hallway into the laundry room.

Consider what kind of storage you'll likely use them for, if you prefer the separation of storage then 24" would be a consideration. For the two 36-inch idea, you might consider having shelving done in the middle and use decorative baskets, etc. Our wall is shorter than yours so did only two 28-inch and used 3" filler between them to space apart.

Even if the rest of your house is beige, don't you have color in your furniture, artwork, pillows, or other accessories? Choose a color that makes you happy and coordinates with your home so it's not a complete disconnect when you walk into the room. Color is very personal. Since all your trim is wood, I would use a soft green or greenish blue in the space and forgo painting the cabinets. If you want to paint the cabinets, paint them in a deeper color with a pale version of it on the walls. Or paint the cabinets white. Greens go well with your wood tones.

Thanks calidesign, I like that soft green in the Queen Anne kitchen very much and it does look great with the golden woodwork. Our furnishings are mostly marine blue, apricot, and gold, so a pale apricot might also work and will probably go with white appliances but as for picking the right shade, I have a terrible color eye. I thought a kitchen I painted yellow was so pretty and our decorator walked in and said, "Oh, chicken fat yellow." LOL! I usually end up painting five or six paint samples on the walls to find the right one.

What color is the floor?

And I agree that it's OK to have fun with color in the laundry. Mine is a tiny alcove in the basement w/ unfinished ceiling, pipes, exposed ductwork, etc. Painted the walls Behr ultra pure white...same as most of the rest of the house. Concrete floor that abuts beige carpet. I painted the floor w/ PPG's Isle Royale in PPG's Break-Through paint. Per PPG, 'Isle Royale is a midtone, pure, teal aqua-green with a jewel undertone.'

It is a tiny splash of color since the laundry is so small but it makes me smile every time I go down there.

Thanks ci_lantro, Your laundry room sounds so cute! The floor in mine is beige terrazzo tile so will not paint it but I like your idea of a splash of color!

I would paint the window trim white and cabinet and door . Put a light gray wall paint . If you have some extra buck I would add a shelf under the cabinet and some small wall art and a greenery

I assume your door and trim matches the rest in your house. You can paint just the cabinets and leave the window trim and door the way they are, or leave them all wood. I don't think it makes sense to have one room with white trim and doors. Since you have marine blue in your other areas, you could paint the laundry walls white and paint the ceiling in a deep marine blue. Or use a blue and white patterned wallpaper all over. Or paint the cabinets white with blue walls or paint the cabinets blue with white walls. All those options would work with your beige floors and wood trim

I think the cabinets would be pretty in a deep blue. You could add brass hardware. A pretty, soft apricot would look nice on the walls.

Wow these are some great ideas! I'm inspired by the pictures and colors! I will try some sketches and color swatches to see what looks best and post a photo but I am leaning toward katinparadie's idea of dark blue cabinets and pale apricot wall paint. Also like Beth H's suggestions and pictures, especially the pic featuring the rattan or bamboo roller shade. That would add a natural element to the room and look good with brass hardware. The floor is new, don't want to change it and I have never been successful at painting ceilings so will leave those alone and just change out the light fixture cover. I like the idea of a shelf over the W/D and can install that myself. I'm super stoked to get going on this project!! Thanks Houzz experts as always, I've gotten so many good ideas here.
