Pendant light and chandelier heights

We have 3 pendant lights (16.25”W x 19”H) over our 5’6”x13’ island. The ceiling height is 11’. I’ve attached pictures. We think the pendants are too high. They are 50” above the island. Our builder said that for the size of our pendants, their standard height is 50” above the counter. And the builder is saying they cannot lower it because the wires have already been cut. Need your advice, please. Do you think they are too high? If so, is it reasonable for us to insist?

Our dining room chandelier (28”W x 29.25H) is 66” from the floor. The ceiling height is 11’. Is that height okay? The third picture is our chandelier.

Rolled into the cost or not, you paid!!! Did he even ask how you wanted them? Did you specify?No........and unfortunately, that IS your DESIGNERS job or your job.

I'l just say he knows he's wrong not to ask, but that was his sub who may know zero and have bad taste.. You can try for a reorder, and he uses them in another house. Or you can try making it the designers fault, which it rather is, unless the designer was simply writing down your selections, works for the builder, and in that case? I wish you luck.: ( Nothing will happen. Change them after the move in? Cry? I guarantee they will not go to the trouble to re wire and get chain, unless the builder is your BROTHER. You can however, find a good lamp repair to re wire, order additional chain, and do this yourself. Make them eat the take down and re install, and EVERYONE has learned a big lesson. Haven't they ? : )

Your builder is full of YOU KNOW WHAT. The pendants are too high. No more than 40 inches from the BOTTOM of the fixture to the counter top. Even with 11 foot ceiling height. To fix, you need them down get them re wired and re installed. Or re select and sell those you have depending what you paid.

The dining room fixture will be fine.,,,,,,,once the table is in place, you'll have 36 inches to the table top. Anything from 32 to 36 is fine, especially given ceiling height.

Flo - I wish it was just the light itself...we renovated our kitchen. It was connected to 2 family rooms. Almost fully open to a small family room on one side, and a small doorway (32” opening) on the other side. We are a family of 5 and no one ever used the larger family room bc of that small opening. It seemed cut off from the rest of the house. We opened up that side, added a breakfast part and stools so it’s now a useable part of the house. We hired a kitchen designer. That was our mistake. He did a great job with the kitchen...but we needed someone to look at the big picture. I started to realize this after it was too late. Everything was going in. I kept thinking I’ll find a way to pull it together when the kitchen’s done and yesterday when I put the 2nd light up I realized how hard it will be ... I am in way over my head. It’s a very long open space. Open floor plan gone badly. I’m beside myself. I need to now just focus on finishing the last few details in the kitchen and bring in some different interior decorators, designers ... I’m not sure what - to figure out how to fix this.

Make sure your island pendants don’t have too much glare for someone sitting at the island. The style of our lights (different from yours) is the same over the sink and the island. The light over the sink was fine, but the glare was horrible when sitting at the island - no problem when standing around. It never occurred to me this was a potential problem. Fortunately bulbs with covered bottoms - which I had never heard of - solved our issue.

I’d go with a Scandinavian style multiple- light chandelier, to create a bit of contrast. It also really depends on the style of the dining area and size of table, etc. If you could provide a picture, it would help

Thank you both. The designer pointed out we needed larger pendants due to the size of the island and suggested these pendants, we agreed, and the cost was folded into the cost of the house. So if we insist they need to lower the pendants, do I have to absorb the cost of the pendants? Or can they order wires and chains from the manufacturer?

Hello, they are too high , in order to get them down just buy chains and rewire. You can look for chains in a hardware store or ina eshop. This is not a complicated work. So stand out for your rights

Agreed it should NOT be a big deal to add chain and wire. They’re beautiful pendants and look great with everything, love your kitchen so much!
