Flood light may be the incorrect term when searching. We have canned lights that are dimmable. Of course I am not in the location to grab our package of replacement bulbs.

eta: my husband says we still are using bulbs from a case he purchased years ago. They are old school - Incandescent (which are almost impossible to find now).

I took a quick look. I would avoid "daylight" or "Bright white" both of which can read blue-ish very harsh. I always prefer soft white.(sorry no link, but I was still signed into amazon.) These should work fine.

We call them canned lighting but the bulb is a flood. Kind of big and heavy. The living room has a tall ceiling.

This article makes it complicated because I don't know the actual size. Or the Par thingy. No info on the bulb.

This may be a project for DH to figure out. I see nothing online which is the same type of silver, which is shiny. He'll probably have to take it to an electrician next week and see what they say. What a pain.

If it is 75 watts, I'm confident it isn't LED. Plus 10 years ago, LEDs were still new and very expensive.

How many ceiling lights do you have? You might be better off replacing all of them at once. If two of them have failed, the rest probably aren't far behind. If you are willing to do that, you don't need to worry about matching the color temperature and CRI of the existing lamps exactly, as long as you get the characteristics you are going for. Unless you have some inherent bias against LEDs, you should switch over. They use so much less energy, and they last 10 times longer than an incandescent so you may never need to change them again.

If you do go LED, you will need to know what light output to get (measured in lumens). A 75 watt incandescent is equivalent to 1100 lumens of light output. If it is halogen, it's probably closer to 1600 lumens.

BR (for bulged reflector) bulbs are lamps with “wide flood” beam angles, which means that they provide more than a 45 degree angle when lighting an area.

PAR (short for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) bulbs are available in these angles:

• Narrow spot, 5-15 degrees
• Spot, 16-22 degrees
• Narrow flood, 23-32 degrees
• Flood, 33-45 degrees
• Wide flood beam, over 45 degrees

The numbers after PAR and BR, like 30, stand for 1/8th of an inch. To find the diameter of the lamp, just divide the number after it by 8: e.g., the diameter of a BR 30 bulb is 30/8ths of an inch, or 3.75 inches in diameter.

So Oakley, measure the diameter of your bulb and figure out how many 8th of an inch it is. It seems like BR30s are pretty common for recessed cans,

Amazon has crappy filters for buying light bulbs because it offers thousands of them but doesn't let you filter by anything useful, like wattage or lumens or technology or type of floodlight. I suggest you try either one of the specialty lighting vendors online (100Bulbs.com, Lightbulbs.com) or someplace like Home Depot (their website is pretty good; light bulbs are under electrical rather than lighting). Or take your lamp to a Home Depot and find someone with an orange apron.

If you’re not exactly sure what you want, I think you’d be better off buying them in person. i usually shop at Lowe’s, but I think I got all my recent replacements at a Home Depot.

They had a display set up where you could compare the brightness of the different floodlight type bulbs. I remember some being too white/harsh of a light which I didn’t like for my kitchen. I replaced all the old bulbs with a soft white dimmable LED.

Oakley, if feasible I would take the bulb to Lowes or HD, Ace, or wherever and ask someone to help you. Lightbulb buying has gotten complicated.

I forgot to thank you all for going out of your way helping me. I used to know everything but boy have things changed. Did you know when my granddaughter was 5 I had to ask her how to turn their TV on? She replied to me looking at the TV and said, "Turn tv on." It came on. lol I miss the simple days.

Not all of the LED bulbs are dimmable. Make sure you look for that on the package.

Definitely straitlover. I went over it with DH and I'll go over it a hundred times more before I send him off on his mission. lol

Just remembered that they do make dimmers that are made to work w/ LED bulbs. I need to replace three dimmers at the beach condo because I retrofitted the recessed lights w/ those LED disk lights that screw in the sockets. W/ the current dimmers, the lights don't dim a whole lot, and if you turn them too low, they just cut off.
