I'm crazy for borders and whenever I do a floor, I incorporate some kind of a border. I can't help myself. In your bathroom I would run a border an equal distance from the wall, from the face of the vanity and from the tub and then I'd jog it into the hallway if you want it to feel like one larger room or not if you want to articulate the hallway as a separate little space . I think those idiosyncrasies of the border jogging are part of what makes them fun though. It might well be worth your while to choose a good floor contractor, pull up the laminate, and consult with the floor people about what is possible. The 90-year-old oak revealed when I pulled up the vinyl in my kitchen was stained with adhesive and water damaged, in addition to which we were removing a wall and relocating plumbing and a radiator. My wonderful floor guy (who was refinishing all the other floors in the house), looked around, pointed to where he could cannibalize from under where cabinets would be, and opined that new flooring would only have to go under cabinets and in the short hall to the pantry. That's how it worked out. There is a slight difference in new oak flooring in the hallway, but the kitchen itself came out fine. Patched and refinished floors from DR into kitchen. Your contractor may also have some ideas about where used flooring that matches your original can be acquired locally. Best of luck.

kempek01 The house was done in warm colors until the last couple months when I have started liking cooler colors. Not sure what the change was in me maybe to brighten things up a bit or midlife wall paint change. I'm not good with colors and I wanted more of a gray however this gray is more of a blue it is SW reflection. I think it also makes the cabinets look more orange. Someone suggested SW agreeable gray or one that has warmer tones. I love to paint it actually relaxes me, picking out colors not so much. We are painting our ceilings white as they still have the builder paint. I read your comment to my husband and he asked how much chocolate I need. Thank you for a much needed laugh and to help with the anxiety of all these choices. Again I stink at putting everything together. I should have said that the island cabinet was used as a separation anxiety relief toy for our dog so that does need to get fixed. You are correct on the next owner thank you again for the laugh. I am torn between doing something for me for the next five years or saving for my forever home.

@julieste The rest of our floors downstairs are oak hardwood. (More specifically, quarter-and-rift sawn 3.5-inch white oak that was installed and finished in place 10 years ago. It's gotten a bit orangey and probably should be refinished, but we can't afford that yet with all the other renovations we're doing. I still like the color, though. It's definitely very traditional-looking. We will probably do a water-based finish when we refinish the floors so they won't get as orangey.) The downstairs bathroom has 12" white tile with a very slight marble look. (I like the look, but it's not in great shape, so it will probably get replaced soon with another marble-look tile, or possibly real marble, maybe a hexagon tile.) The current kitchen has the 12" square marble-look white tile as well, with some green accent tile around the edges. The kitchen floor is in terrible shape (water damage underneath), which is why we're remodeling. The upstairs is a mix of light oak parquet and carpet, but that will all be replaced with oak hardwood that matches downstairs as soon as we can afford it.
