How do you control

the sun when taking pictures. Today I took some but it was so deadly out there , 15 minutes at a time was all I could manage .....and then there were problems with the sun being so intense that trying to get a decent picture was difficult . I tried using my umbrella but it is black and caused too much shadow . Seems there is never a happy medium ........so frustrating .

Assuming you can't take pictures earlier in the day, I'd suggest getting a lighter color umbrella to use - ideally white.

I have been trying to find a white umbrella........only ones I seem to be able to find are frilly ones meant for weddings.............

Beween pulling/digging and then using Round-Up, I've managed to keep sprouts of Bermuda out of my gravel -- or at least small enough to be acceptable to me. I had a larger patch of it that a landscaper came and sprayed with some death-kill stuff that took care of it in a week. Bermuda is great when it's where you want it. But everywhere else, it's a major frustration!

I use thick layers of newspaper covered by lawn clippings, then covered by woodchips. (which I get delivered by a local tree surgeon) I struggle with quack grass, so I'm trying to be agressive with mulch as I can. If you layered over most weeds with this method (basically the lasagna method) most weeds will be smothered, and the worms will till up the soil for you under there as they eat the decomposing organic matter in the bottom layer, so you'll have a fluffier soil too. However, quack grass is a special case, so I may resort to deep barriers buried in the ground and then I'll have to hand-weed every length of root out - which I've done on a small scale before :( Best of luck, Gail

Jan - It's best to apply a systemic before the buds form. The Bayer product says it works for 6 weeks. I'm thinking all the rain we've had flushed it out of the soil sooner than that. With that much rain, you probably needed to reapply in 4-5 weeks. As for Spinosad, you can apply it directly to the buds, old flowers, leaves etc. Last year, while my first dark flowers were thrip damaged, subsequent buds that had been sprayed for a few days with Spinosad showed little or no damage. Thrips go for the more mature buds - not the tiny ones. I hope this helps. I stocked up on the Spinosad this year. Debra

How do you control a grape vine?

Grapes do not make underground stolons that pop up and invade. They are rampant growers however, and are controlled with annual prunings. A good vine in a good year will grow 20ft or more, but this is cut back every year. If annual pruning is not possible or desirable, don't plant grapes. Transplanting a cultivated grape into the wild might not be the best option. If you are living in an area with people who plant grapes, the presence of a grape that harbors pests and diseases might be the bane of their gardening.

There are umbrellas meant to be used for photography. They cost more than a regular one costs.

Bright sunny days are a problem. If you take early morning pictures, you will get grainy pictures and distorted colors: purples will be bluish, salmons will be rosy, and yellows will be whiter. Sometimes, clouds roll in later in the morning. Sometimes, too, a bloom will take well in full sun (but usually not whites) at certain hours (mainly 9-11). Getting good pictures is a lot of work; that's why there are a lot of bad pictures out there.
