I feel like rustic wood shelving would be logical to repeat the horizontal lines of the railings (which I love by the way!). Just 6" deep with large enough spacing between for larger pieces like art and plants. Like this but obviously without the cabinet.

I was thinking along that line! When we dry walled I put in an area where we could cut out the drywall and have a recessed area with lighting. So I could put some wood shelving in that area? I was second guessing whether that recessed area would add anything to the space so we didn't cut it out. Maybe I should. pic of the recessed area with electrical already run.

I don't know if I'd recess that area because your updates look more modern/craftsman and recessed niches seem very 80's contemporary to me. You could use that electrical to run very minimal top lights under the back edges for a little brightness - be careful of the lighting color temp to avoid making that space too yellow.

I would maybe even get rope lights embedded into the front lip of the shelf - these puck lights are too visible to me. Look for something at least 3000K. I would put three shelves basically spaced in the red square area (across the full width though, than add a large basket below with a cozy throw peeking out/over.

If the shelves aren't recessed I realized we only have about 3" on one side because of the door trim. Unless the shelves cut into the trim. Or angled the shelves towards the right so they are more of a trapezoid. Or a console table would be able to come out the full 6" since it's not wall to wall.
