Updating 80s cabinets before selling
Comments (11)I also vote for either price with the cabinets in mind or replace the doors only. I would NOT try to paint the oak strip to match the formica. That may make matters worse if done poorly. FWIW, when we sold our house, we had 70s/80s cabinets and they weren't even a mainstream design then (glossy green cabinets with linear brass trim). The previous owner spent a lot of money putting in the cabinets she liked. We liked what she did when we bought so we kept them. What we found out was outdated mainstream cabinets are acceptable (like the ones you have) but outdated unique cabinets are a problem. It was the main feature buyers and realtors said they really disliked. The interiors of the frameless cabinets were great - lots of upgrades but the doors(!). One agent told us to replace all the cabinets (HA!). In the end, we did absolutely nothing to the cabinetry. We priced the house very slightly on the low side (softening market) and polished the doors and brass. We got our target price which wasn't out of line for the neighborhood....See MoreLate 80's home: interior paint color and design help sought
Comments (30)Thanks for your kind words about the house. :) awm03, I believe you're correct that this house is post-MCM. It was listed as such on Zillow. "Just noting, though, that both the dining and front rooms seem to be visible from the family room, so I'm wondering about visual...symmetry with one very dark and the other very light. Also, painting the dining room dark will make that one set of windows especially dominant during the day." hamamelis, good points! "Curtains aside, they also seem to be asking me for a console or some such thing under the single panes..." I guess that would be possible if the console or some such sat far enough from the wall so that the drapes could move behind it. "Regarding the glass and mirrors, it occurs to me that the front room would change light and character dramatically with all of it gone. And that it can be beautiful when well done and lit." Excellent point. I think I'm not liking it now because there are so many things on it. I was looking at the listing photos and I much prefer it with a few select pieces of art. "Why is there what looks like a little wall sticking out in the middle, though, with the glass continuing on?" It does have a little wall that divides the glass area into two sections. It's just decorative and has been there since the house was designed - no doorway removal. justerrilynn, I like those styles of rugs. I've been eyeing them up on Overstock. I'm going to mull over the light-colored leather sofa idea. My set is getting older, but it's still in good condition, so it might be a hard sell to the BF. Lighter colors and a more MCM design would fit better in this house. I think after digesting all of the advice given, that I'll stick with light, neutral colors and hold off on the deep blue dining room. I suspect that a new coat of paint is going to go a long ways towards making things seem fresh and inviting. Thank you!...See MoreSlowly removing the 80s from the 80s Kitchen (paint & LVT)
Comments (10)that new stuff isn't much different from what you currently have. I think you could find something better. if you have any aspirations of painting those cabinets in the future, white would work better w/that color flooring. If I had to rob a bank, I'd get the money and put it toward that bubble florescent fixture. Honestly, that is the worst thing I've ever seen. Please, splurge and get an electrician or a family handy guy over to remove that and give you 6 cans. you'll be amazed at the diff. if you can do the cans, at least get rid of that behemoth and do a flush mount fixture. are you DIY ? painting those cabs will freshen up that spot. even if it takes you two months, you could do it yourself for a few hundred. countertops,,check in pre-fab granite or quartz they cost about 300-500 for one 22"X9' slab. hire a fabricator to come and cut it for your kitchen (800 or so) do the legwork yourself, offer cash, and save big time....See MoreHelp choosing paint color to paint ugly 80s-era wood built-in bookcase
Comments (7)Painting the cabs to a high standard is an investment in both time and money I would not do in a rental. Also, is the owner supplying the paint for the walls? As a landlord and a former renter, I would make sure that any colors chosen get the owners approval first. As to what shade could work best for you on the walls, can you share more pics? Agree with you that the current shade isn't working. And I would most likely paint out that bit of white trim to match the new wall colour, if the landlord approves....See MoreGreenDesigns
