What to plant on shady deck for privacy
Comments (11)I have had both jasmine and elephant ears in part sun and they have done just fine, although the EEs may try to stretch for whereever the sun is so placing them right in that spot would keep them more upright (if that is the effect you want). They also won't require as much water when in less sun. Jasmines in particular can adapt quite readily believe it or not and I had no problems with blooming. Along the EE line, most of the arums (including caladiums), could do well in those conditions. I'm trying some calla tubers (an arum) this year so I'll see how they do!...See MoreSuggestions for planting around elevated deck
Comments (3)For sure close it in. I would lay a garden hose around the deck to determine some curvy lines (please don't make straight lined beds), Don't fill it all in, do several groups with separation between them. I picture some ornamental grasses in various heights, with some splashes of colored perennials, depending on the sun exposure, which appears to be full sun, look for drought tolerant, which usually means they will thrive under neglect. However they all need some water and care. Most bushes, once established do well with very little effort. Maybe throw in some big boulders to take up space and they need no care at all. . . Who knows, after you put all the effort into it, you may surprise yourself and not have such a green thumb. :)...See MoreDeckscaping design around shady deck
Comments (4)Since you are doing an Asian theme the groundcover Sanicula caerulescens comes to mind, as it is a native to China. These little plants only grow about six inches tall and spread twelve inches; in your zone these plants may stay evergreen. The paintbrush blue flowers are beautiful on top of the bronze finished foliage. They are hard to find though; I know Streambank Gardens has them. Other Asia native plants that love shade are corydalis, polystichum(evergreen fern), and Athyrium niponicum(Japanese Painted Fern)....See MoreNeed advice on plants for around pool deck
Comments (21)gumper97, that is exactly the look we are going for, except our pool is a rectangle (in keeping with the straight lines of our FLW/Prairie style home). Thanks so much for those plant suggestions. We have about half of what you listed planted in various areas around the house so I know those will survive. I got the idea originally from a landscaped pool area that I saw on Pinterest. Yardvaark, the river rock we will be using is mixed color with some gray and brown tones and we are either going with the 1"-3" size or the 3"-5" size, tbd with some larger rocks like yours placed here and there for interest. I can make the width outside the fence larger than 2' if necessary but I'm not sure if too late to change the plans for the 2' within the fence. My husband wants to do stone instead of grass or mulch because he doesn't want that stuff getting into the pool and he doesn't want to have to mow within the fence since he already has almost 2 acres of lawn to mow. Emmarene, we will have a flagstone pathway leading from our front sidewalk to the pool....See Morewoodyoak zone 5 southern Ont., Canada
