Does 'Plum Pudding' win the vigor award for ...
Comments (17)Plum Pudding is more vigorous than others for me, but still declines after a few years. Green Spice looks great with it and is the most vigorous one I have grown. They need high nitrogen fert (I use coffee grounds) and sunshine early in the spring to do well for me. Perhaps some other varieties that I killed before I knew this would do better now that I know what they like. I have been able to keep a supply of replacements by doing this: early in the growing season, I snap the top off of any large heurchera that has a woody stalk a few inches long. I stick the snapped off part into a small pot with some good potting soil and let them root in my cold frame. The are pretty small at first, but by the next year, they are one-gallon size and ready to plant out. The mother plant survives and sprouts new offshoots and often looks fuller as a result. It sounds drastic, but it works....See MoreCanary Islands wins Best Cheese in the World Award
Comments (8)Here are some of these happy goats on a country road. We often have to stop the car for them when they cross from one grazing area to another. Cathy I wonder how much cheese they produce. Apparently the co-op has 50 employees and has been making this cheese for a long time. Perhaps after winning this award they may increase production. Comments (27)hi eleena, i am a kd, but it was a little different working on this since it is my own house. also, was the most difficult space i have worked on to date. we couldn't spend the money to rip out the chimney. the original owners flipped the staircases at some point (I think to put in a bathroom on the second floor). they crammed in something that would no longer pass inspection in this day and age and isn't really all that great for the house - I would have loved to have rectified the situation but there wasn't enough space or money to do so. working with what I had is what i had to do and making the best of it was the challenge (and fun). when I look through my computer I realize I have about 2 dozen different floorplan options that i tried before finalizing this. when i work with homeowners as a kd i present as many viable options as I can see but never 2 dozen! thank you!...See MoreAward-Winning Hosta Collection
Comments (43)Wow what a wonderful cousin you have! They look great ! Good job. I'm with bkay on this. Grow them in these pots until you see roots poking out the bottoms and then just barely up pot....then repeat and repeat. Remember to water water water in hot weather and make sure they are draining well. One day when they are much bigger you might try the ground.. I have or have had them all at some time. Patriot is lovely but doesn't love our heat, so if it doesn't thrive it's not because of anything you did. The others are happy. I have 3 SnS...2 in ground and 1 potted. The potted one is the biggest and happiest. I mix in wheel barrow 1 bag soil conditioner, 1 bag Sta green tree and shrub garden soil which is a good mix...not dirt...and 1/2 to 3/4 bag of potting mix . The mini nuggets that WW said would work great to...I just have bought a lot of bags of these and will use up. All this is from Lowe's. This is what works for me and my hostas love it. Of course you won't need this much mix at one time but you get the idea. Liberty probably won't ever be 6 ft across for us, but it will be bigger than the others and BEAUTIFUL and we enjoy the smaller versions just as much as if it was. And that's the key...ENJOY! :-) Gloria...See More
