Can I have both a peninsula and island in my kitchen?
Comments (14)I have both an island and a peninsula. But my island is a 24" x 24" cabinet, with a Boos chopping block on it. And it has wheels. I just measured and where we have it sitting in the kitchen and it is 31" from the peninsula, 34" from the sink, and 36" from the range. There's only two of us in the kitchen, usually, so it's never in the way. And it's so nice to have something to chop everything up on and just spin around and put in a pot, or wash veggies in the sink and turn and place them on the chopping block, where they get chopped and turned around into the pan. We put it on wheels so that if it was in the way we could move it. But we hardly ever move it. In fact, with it being so central, we do about 75% of our kitchen work on the thing because we can stand at it from all four sides. If you could fit in something like that, I wouldn't underestimate the value of 4 square feet in the middle of your kitchen....See MoreKitchen Cabinets Have Been Painted...do I have an issue?
Comments (9)Here is how I would expect a pro to spray paint kitchen cabinets. A brush painted job would differ slightly in that you wouldn't hang the doors to paint. You'd place them on a work table or easel instead. It's time intensive work, and should take 7-14 days to accomplish completely and cost between 3K-7K depending on kitchen size and amount of detail in cabinets. Remove doors and drawer fronts. Remove hinges and hardware. Clean with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) Rinse and let dry. Scrape any loose finish. Fill any damaged spots or hardware holes that won't be reused. Sand fill smooth. Scuff sand the rest. Tack off dust. Hang in dust free paint booth with wires through hardware points. Tack off dust again. Spray with alkyd based primer. Scuff sand again. Tack off dust. Spray with second coat of primer. Spray with first finish coat of latex enamel. Spray with second coat of latex. If glazing is to occur, that is next. Spray with conversion varnish. (If being brush painted, this step is typically skipped.) Add more molding or decorative details to boxes, filling nail holes and sanding smooth. Repeat prep process with face frames and exposed cabinet sides using plastic to create a spray booth on site. If interiors are to be done, they are done before face frames and sides. Interiors are difficult, and add both time and expense to the job. Allow everything to fully cure. Clean hinges and hardware and clear coat if you're keeping the old hardware. Install new (or old) hinges and hardware. Re-install doors and drawers and adjust for proper clearances. If you are receiving a job without this amount of effort, then you are not receiving a quality professional job....See MoreKitchen Layout - Can I have 2 islands?
Comments (4)You have room for 1 island and a small almost bisto sized table and chairs, or 2 small islands. I can't see where a second island or even the breakfast table will go that won't interfere with some traffic pattern through to the sunroom or family room. You don't have enough walls to have a true "nook". Maybe make the openings to the sunroom and family room smaller (but maybe with window passthroughs) so you have some wall space to anchor a table that will keep it out of the traffic flow. Orienting the island parallel to the refrigerator wall/sink wall doesn't really leave you enough room to open the refrigerator or have passers by behind the seating. The long side should be parallel to the cooktop wall. Plus, your prep sink is in the wrong location/isn't shown on the smaller island. It should be closer to the cooktop where you'll need it most, and also close to the fridge side. What is the purpose of the butler's pantry? You have a wine cooler in the main kitchen, and you have a huge pantry wall, and the cleanup sink and dish storage is about as far from the dining room as you can get. So, what purpose does having a butler's pantry serve? If it is to be a true butler's pantry, it would be better to have the cleanup sink on the fridge wall with maybe a passthrough to the butler's pantry so that dishes could be stored there, and that's probably the better location for "adult beverage" storage and the glasses associated with it. Or, it could be a true pantry, and you could eliminate much of that very expensive "wall of tall" that you have going on. You need to define your wants/needs better, and you need to actually "walk the walk" in your mind and think about the paths you'd need to put away groceries, or clean up after a meal. What you have looks pretty, but it doesn't function well....See MoreWhat can I hang over my island. I do not have electrical
Comments (1)Do not hang pots and pans from a rack. They never end up looking nice. How is your kitchen lit if you have no electricity over the island? You don't have to have pendants over an island....See Morefelizlady
