Rep Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) Rant

cait1

With dems like this who needs enemies.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) "reportedly" (No. She actually said it) said Democrats don't need "any more black faces that don't want to be a black voice" during a liberal Netroots Nation conference on Sunday, a comment that comes as racial politics threaten to divide the party.

The Washington Post reports Pressley said she's not interested in bringing "a chair to an old table."

“This is the time to shake that table. ... We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice,” Pressley reportedly said during the event. “We don’t need any more black faces that don’t want to be a black voice.

Pressley's comments followed a tumultuous week of Democratic infighting, as establishment Democrats continue to clash with a new wave of elected progressives in the party. "

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/453007-pressley-democrats-need-any-more-black-voices-that-dont-want-to-be-a-black

Here's what she said:

“We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice.

We don’t need black faces that don’t want to be a black voice.

We don’t need Muslims that don’t want to be a Muslim voice.

We don’t need queers that don’t want to be a queer voice”

A video of her rant is on this twitter link, I don't know how to post videos from twitter

https://twitter.com/RealSaavedra/status/1150573502803533824

Ok, fine that she said that but what about,

"We don’t need white faces that don’t want to be a white voice."?

Or would that be raaaacist? Or is it just more proof that dems want to silence white people who don't adhere to the lefts' PC nonsense?

Are the dems' colors brown, black and rainbow? Is their religion Islam? Do whites and those of other religions have a place within the dem party?

And with dems favoring illegal aliens over Americans, do they even want Americans in their party anymore?

These are the question current dems and those who vote dem have to ask the new emerging party members because from what I'm hearing the new dems want a rather exclusive club. White Christians and Jews need not apply.

I'll also offer a bit of advice to the dem party - identity politics and group think are a losing strategy.

Don't stop!

LOL--thank you POTUS! Shine a spotlight on these communists!

Can't wait until the shoe drops on them.

He knows that as long as the racist, feckless 4 are taking all the air out of the room--away from the actual candidates--it forces them to keep pushing further and further to the left just to get some attention.

I agree, Cait. I'm sick to death of identity politics like Pressley espouses. I think lots of Americans are, as well.

Identity politics force people to focus on race, ethnicity, or skin color at the expense of the substance of critical issues we need to deal with as a country.

Disagree with something a woman of color says? Especially if you're a white male? You might be able to have a discussion, but you might also be criticized for discriminating against her gender or ethnicity, before being able to begin a serious conversation about the real core of the viewpoint you disagree with. If you can ever get to that point.

I've seen too many of our conversations here derailed by accusations of discrimination or racism, when that's not even the topic at hand.

That's completely damaging to our ability to make progress on the things we need to discuss as a country. Not every issue is affected by gender or skin color. Injecting these factors unnecessarily only adds barriers to issues that are already complicated or difficult to agree on.

Under the guise of welcoming diversity and recognizing minority voices, to appear "tolerant" and inclusive, the tunnel vision of identity politics actually causes divisions in our society to worsen.

One major reason for that division is the "tolerance" too often extends to those who fit within the prescribed groups that Pressley outlines in her rant. It's not helpful, and I don't think it will be a good strategy in 2020 for mainstream America, either.

Too Long Didn't Read: I'm really sick of people who think everything needs to be viewed through a filter of gender or skin color.

Well, it worked for eight years. You couldn't possibly be against Obama's policies, you must be a racist. But it's like chewing a stick of gum for to long, eventually it loses it's flavor. Dems haven't found anything new yet so they are still chewing.

I don't understand how this is acceptable for any member of Congress. If you want to represent and be a voice for only certain races of people, be an activist. Be a community organizer. Don't get elected to Congress if you're just going to agitate and separate. Congress members get elected to represent everyone in their districts and unless they are 100% racially monolithic, it's showing preferential treatment and an unbalanced agenda, where the priorities of people like Pressley lie with her own race, and not others.

cait, yes, if any white politician said that, they'd be pilloried, and rightly so.

Instead on the Left today, it's perfectly acceptable for a black woman to openly state her agenda is to advocate on behalf of her own race, and for white politicians to grovel for forgiveness for being born white.

What a dumpster fire of anti-American ideals the Democrat party espouses.

catkin, it was actually the NY Post's cover photo of the Twin Towers bursting into flames that people like AOC said was verboten, because it was a "trigger" or some kind of dog whistle. Can you imagine? We're not only supposed to forget, but abolish all images of the horrors of 9-11 because Ihan Omar is preaching that she's a victim of 9-11?

(Of course Omar also lied about CIAR's founding because she panders to them just that much)

You can't get more identity politics than the White Pride Trump is selling. Because that's all he's got. His tax cuts were only for the rich. Farmers and small businesses are hurt by his tarriffs. There's no wall and Mexico isn't paying for anything, and his mismanagement has left chaos at the border. There's no beautiful better health care. White Pride is all he has to offer, and that seems to be enough for his supporters.

Trump stepped on the Democratic Party wedge issue with his racist tweets. Everyone in the Democratic Party is coming to the defense of the squad after what Trump said and that puts an end to the wedge. It won't do Trump any good trying to pin the 4 women's policy positions on the Democratic candidates because those candidates will have plenty of time to make their policy positions clear over the next year and a half.

I'm tired of the increasingly acceptable intellectual dishonesty of calling people racist in lieu of debate and discussion, especially in politics.

Calling people racist is a lazy knee-jerk reaction that adds nothing to the problem solving this country needs to get on with. Quickest way to shut down a conversation you can find. That's great, if your real end goal is to increase division.

Calling people hypocrites is pretty worthless too, in terms of changing minds or moving people towards any kind of an understanding. I know that, and try to avoid it. But man, it's really hard not to notice the hypocrisy of people like Pressley who insist on classifying people into little separate identity boxes, when so many on the left complain that Trump is trying to divide the country.

The right is more likely to see people as Americans first, and color second. Trump is asking for the Squad to be viewed (and criticized) in terms of their lack of support for their country, but the left almost always insists on viewing everything in terms of race.

Carro:

What a dumpster fire of anti-American ideals the Democrat party espouses.

I never thought I would live to see that day, but it is here.

Our country is at a precipice--do we embrace hate, insults, control, political correctness, abandonment of morality and embrace lawlessness, restriction of freedoms, socialism, or do we continue with stiving for and practicing honor, truth, liberty, freedom, fairness, rights of free speech, trials, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, rights to own weapons, self sufficiency and capitalism--individuals the focus of life, not a government controlling all aspects of our lives.

I know which side I support.

On the news this morning was old Joe Biden trying to remake himself to get elected to the presidency. He was answering questions about his new "health care plan," you know he and Obama shouted the praises of Obamacare but he'll turn on a dime like most politicans do for self preservation.

Biden was saying "you can keep your private insurance if you have it through your employer" and I thought who does he think he is telling us what we can have and not have for our health care, that we're going to lose our private policies and he will decide this?

The democrat party wants control over all aspects of our lives.

The four adolescent acting mean and "tough" girls on Capitol Hill patting one another on the back between turns at the microphone to insult our country, our president, and our values are indicative of what is happening. I do not believe that all people that vote for the democrat party approve of their actions and narratives--not working for the constintuents but spewing hate for our country and our ideals and encouraging divisiveness unless of course that is what their constituents want. We shall see come time for their reelection, won't we?

The racist accusations have become comical and are now blown off.

Good for President Trump handing it back to them.

The charges by these women demostrate they aren't up to taking criticism of their positions, because they cry racism, misogyny, xenophobia, at the drop of any criticism. Apparently, from their responses, they consider themselves untouchable and act as though they have immunity from criticism--no doubt have grown up in a society the last twenty years where that's the norm, because they were coddled in their enclaves.

They'd better put on some big girl panties because it's coming back to them.

No free passes for wearing red lipstick or a turban, we're equal doncha know ladies?

There's a new sheriff in town.

@ Kitchenwitch

His tax cuts were only for the rich.

Um... no.

To reiterate: 80% of taxpayers received a tax cut. 5% faced tax increases and those are the wealthy who had their mortgage interest, state and local taxes capped.

https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/publications/distributional-analysis-conference-agreement-tax-cuts-and-jobs-act/full

and just in case someone wants to complain about the source:

Farmers and small businesses are
hurt by his tarriffs
[sic].

Yes, but I still think China has more to lose by not negotiating a fair trade deal.

There's no wall and Mexico isn't paying for
anything, and his mismanagement has left chaos at the border
.

The wall is going up. If the dems would agree to a 2% tax on remittances sent to countries who benefit from the porous border and from where illegals come from, then not just Mexico but those countries would be helping to fund the wall. Mexicans sent $26.1 billion from January to November 2017, according to the central bank of Mexico and that mostly came from Mexicans working in America. 2% of that would go a long at funding many things. Unfortunately, dems only look to tax the heck out of Americans and want to give away 'free stuff' to aliens and illegals who they hope will be their new slave/voter base.

There's no
beautiful better health care
.

There will be once BOcare is gone. Oh, and speaking of BOcare, that cost has hurt many Americans so the BOcare fiasco cancels out the pain farmers are feeling while trade negotiations are happening with China.

White Pride is all he has to offer, and
that seems to be enough for his supporters
.

SMH at that risible opinion.

Carro, 9/11 happened to all of us collectively, more so of course for those killed, maimed, and left behind by their loved ones. Sadly, people of Omar's ilk want to make everything about them. IMO there's some sociopathic and narcistic tendancies in Omar and her not-so-merry band of associates.

The wealthiest Americans benefitted far more than everyone else. The corporate tax cut generated massive income for the wealthiest families who own companies and who are shareholders. And their cut is permanent. The household cuts will expire in a few years.

The tiny middle class tax cut for some people was a bone thrown to keep the people quiet while the richest made fistfuls of money at America's expense as we go deeper and deeper into debt. Why not use some of that corporate tax revenue to pay off the debt in a strong economy? Instead, we are adding to the debt as tax revenue took a massive hit.

This was a gift to the wealthy. If Trump had done just tax cuts on households and not corporations, I might have believed this was for the benefit of the people. But he didn't.

To reiterate: 80% of taxpayers received a tax cut. 5% faced tax increases and those are the wealthy who had their mortgage interest, state and local taxes capped.

Who are the other 15%??

That "wealthy" group includes a LOT of not-so-wealthy seniors who are really struggling to hang on to their homes. They're getting hit by skyrocketing property values/taxes in many areas because of gentrification and and secondly by capping deductions. They can hardly afford to keep their home.

I know one thing from a fair bit of screaming I heard at tax time. All those wonderful cuts amounted to almost nothing for many in that 80%....like $10-15 a week. WhoooHooo!! Many couldn't even really see it in their paychecks. The top % made out like bandits.

Re: those corporate taxes. These companies in many cases were arleady paying ZERO taxes. The least Congress could have done was tie the tax break in with jobs created in the US, put the deductions on a sliding scale dependent upon SOME type of criteria. Instead they just got a big ole gift that demands nothing of them. After the very obvious PR move of gifting employees with a one time bonus in some cases, companies then proceeded to buy back stock....which was predicted by those protesting the cuts. The much touted "but they'll invest in the company, creating new jobs, building factories" never happened...we knew it wouldn't in most cases. Most co's didn't even give bonuses. They gave the finger to their employees and carried on as usual.

From cait1's link:

We find the bill would reduce taxes on average for all income groups in both 2018 and 2025. In general, higher income households receive larger average tax cuts as a percentage of after-tax income, with the largest cuts as a share of income going to taxpayers in the 95th to 99th percentiles of the income distribution.

I wasn't familiar with Pressley at all until she came to the attention of the public as part of the four freshman Democrats.

Based on Cait's link in the OP, I sought out and watched more videos last night, at Daily Kos, of comments made during the Netroots Nation conference. I didn't see anything in the clips I watched that made me feel any more positive about Pressley's identity politics as presented in her OP comments.

I read her Twitter feed today. I disagree completely with her interpretation of events at the border, her characterization of Trump and his entire administration, and her opinions on reparations, ICE, and the Border Patrol.

I don't support anyone who believes that ICE and CBP are criminal agencies destroying families and killing children. I really don't care what color she is; her voice isn't one I'm happy to see guiding the future of our country. But of course, I'm not one of the constituents who voted for her, and I'm sure they'd disagree with my opinion.

The question is why they are getting massive tax cuts and the middle class are getting small ones.

What massive tax cuts?

The people making between 200k and 500k are the ones who missed out on a tax cut and I don't consider them either super wealthy or 'poor'.

The 10% tithe on those making less than 9.52k is ridiculous. The govt isn't a church.

People forget that it wasn't that long ago that no American paid taxes on their salaries; salaries aren't income. It wasn't until BigGov adopted the Marxist progressive tax system that Americans had the screws put to them.

Our founders are spinning in their graves over this theft. But no one cares about what the founders created or their intention to create a country of truly free people. Now everyone seems happy to be a government slave.

Well by being black, my voice is automatically a black voice. That’s how it works. What she ACTUALLY means is we don’t need minorities who don’t want to be a progressive voice. mudmud: Identity politics force people to focus on race, ethnicity, or skin color at the expense of the substance of critical issues we need to deal with as a country.

Kathy: Isn’t this exactly what Trump does every day? He uses it as deflection from the problems he has imposed on US and his issues that crop up from the past. It is the best way to get the media to jump on him. Then he denies that is what he meant.

How does Trump use identity politics? I don't see it.

Trump does make controversial statements, for sure. But I haven't seen any that define people based on their race, ethnicity, or skin color. When has he made a tweet about "black voices, brown voices, queer voices?" When has me made a tweet that referenced the color of somebody's skin?

What happens is, he says something controversial, and his critics (media too) label the statement as being racist in nature. Over and over. Then he and those who support him (raises hand) argue that the statement wasn't racist. Over and over.
