My Disappointing New KA Stand Mixer
Comments (41)I bought my wife the 5.5Qt lift bowl model number "KV25mexer5" from Costco. It has all steel gears. I got when they had basically 2 sales on it at same time. $50 off from KA and $30 off from Costco so we paid $249.00 total. For $250 it is probably the best choice you can find for a mixer, we have not had any problems with ours after 5 months of use so far. Hasn't had any problem making a 3 cup batch of bread dough using the dough hook and on speed 2 like it says to do. So far for us and especially for the price it was the best deal for our needs. It is loud but so is every other mixer in this power range. It seems rather solid, no grinding, everything works smoothly. I seriously looked at the Bosch Universal which is definitely a better mixer especially if you make a lot of large 6+ cup dough batches. But for the one I would buy (stainless bowl with blender) is $550 on sale. So more than double the price. For how much we use a mixer this Costco KA was our best deal by far, plus the added perk of if anything happens to it the first year or maybe even longer we could just take it right back for a full refund or replacement with no hassles. IF you use the hell out of a mixer though I would pay the extra and get the Bosch Universal. As far as where the KA "Stand Mixers" are made they are actually made in Greenville OH. The KA hand mixers are however made in China. But like most everything else made in China it is made there under the exact specifications that the American Company wants, unfortunately that happens to be cheap as humanly possible which is why they are made there. IF the American company stated we want the best possible mixer you can make and stated exactly what they wanted, what materials to use etc that is exactly what they would get from China. So while everyone continually puts the blame on China it really has next to nothing to do with them. It is the American company that purposely wants crap at the cheapest price possible....See MoreWhere does your stand mixer and food processor live?
Comments (50)Holly - from the KDs I talked with, all of them were figuring the Rev-a-shelf, so I wouldn't be surprised if yours is too. Most of them didn't even seem aware that K&V made one, let alone that it had the gas cylinder. I haven't used the Knape & Vogt one, so I honestly don't know how much of a difference there is between the two...I'm just going by other things that I've had the gas assist cylinder available for in life and those worked more smoothly. I'd hate to steer you toward something that I have no first hand experience with...so, definitely look into it more. I didn't find a lot of info out there on the K&V. I did wind up buying mine online through Home Depot, but I didn't see it at the stores (when it arrived, it was shipped directly from K&V, I think) - it seemed that they had the best price that I was finding on it overall. Still more expensive than the R-a-S one though. Here's the HD link: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/203303465?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=knape+vogt+appliance&storeId=10051&N=5yc1v&R=203303465#.UWGPBVejslU And here it is from Kitchensource: http://www.kitchensource.com/cau/kv-hal-1.htm#body_page_header As near as I can tell, the R-a-S one has a pull-bar type mechanism that runs under the board where the mixer rests and the K&V one has the "buttons" to release built in along the sides of the mechanism - they are the two darker grey things you see at the bottom front of the mechanism. Mine's sitting in my basement just waiting...I wish that there was an easy way to test it....See Moremixer stand problems?
Comments (9)Is there any reason the mixer stands can't be installed below a drawer with a lower "up position? I know they're ideally supposed to be about counter height so I'm guessing that's why they can't be installed beneath a drawer, but if one doesn't mind (or even prefers) working lower, does that work? I'm looking at the schematics for a few and they seem to have plenty of space beneath--some even offer to sell a basket to go beneath. (Obviously the thing would have to be mounted low to avoid drawer banging...) What am I missing?...See MoreAnyone gotten rid of a stand mixer?
Comments (89)Linelle, Thx! I will try the extra long mixing. I also chill my dough when I have time. My grandmother (96 and still making cookies) told me to use extra flour which also helps with the spreading. I watch my cookies like a hawk and take them out right before they look done :) I love the dough and the cookies! I have a gray KA mixer that I love but now that it's on my new counter, in my new kitchen, I really, really, really, want a pretty color!!! Oh but the guilt in getting something new when what I have works just fine.... hatethecold- I am stealing your screen name :)...See Moresnmanning
