It looks like an early instar pawpaw sphinx cat to me, Angie. I found one a few years ago on yaupon, quite a surprise! I don't think yaupon and pawpaw are closely related. As the cat gets older, it'll develop purple coloring along the side that's very pretty. I'm attaching a link that should help if you decide to raise it yourself. Until today I had never seen the Hummingbird / Sphinx moth on flowers. At a neighbor's Lantana, I saw what appeared to be more than one variety of these moths. Do they cause any problems that interfere with raising butterflies? Some people seem to have hearty Lantanas and others have trouble getting them to come up year after year. Sylvia

Utmost of compliments on the fabulous photography skills! Can I assume those photos by you both are not taken on a simple point & shoot camera phone??? I'd love to hear yes for the camera phone, then maybe I can try to take a few. I appreciate the tip on the four o clocks. I have an empty spot and may look for seed next trip into the big city. Or would I be too late for it to have growth for the moth to lay it's eggs on? I do have tomatoes (yipes) that I won't appreciate being the host plant, but if I have somewhere to transfer the children to.......And I've got a spare fuschia I'm willing to sacrifice. SCG: is this the 1st year that you're growing 4 o'clocks as a host plant or have you had success with the cats using them in the past? And is that pink flower with white trim a petunia bloom or a four o'clock bloom? Thanks!

The eggs look like tiny, round pearls and are found on the upper and lower surface of the leaves. The adults deposit them one at a time, never in clusters. They are very small....like the head of a pin. The baby caterpillar hatches from those eggs, which should tell you how long they have been feeding on your tomatoes to get that large. It pays to be observant. My advice to you is to Google Tobacco Hornworm Eggs. You'll find many educational links with lots and lots of pictures. Knowledge is power.
