Help with railing/newel post(s) on open treads please
Comments (25)mairin - I guess there's a chance they'd mess up the finished floor if they did that now? Anyway, I wanted the newel just 1 step up, same as it would be if we had a bullnose step and volute/turnout, they could still notch it out to snug up to 2nd tread. But 1st guy didn't want to do that, wanted permnission in writing from building inspector (and now 9 months later I'm even more reluctant to go asking), 2nd guy never got back to me after coming out for a quote and nodding his head yes the whole time, and my cousin who has been doing all the trim in my house (and building new window jambs and stools where the builder didn't do them right) says that he doesn't want to do it, even if we put blocking under the first tread. I guess when they're on the floor they actually are attached to a joist? I showed him pics of crazyhouse6's newel and he didn't think it would hold up to lateral forces (swinging), though it was fine for someone just pulling straight on it. So what do you think of my newel options? Which should I choose? It will be 2 weeks to get the oak contemporary newel that I posted first. The 2.5 x 3.5 blocks of cherry are here, just need to get cousin to cut and route them, I can put clear finish on and get them up but I don't know how they look with oak rail. My favorite is still the vertical volute with a newel somewhere near the bottom, but I haven't even thought of balusters (BC newel and rail with oak balusters?), and I need to find someone to install it....See MoreGot the newels! Now need help with stain and placement.
Comments (19)Thanks Becky - I have Paint too, never thought of using that (though my hand isn't too steady). I hope mom2reese dones't mind, here's a pic that has a good expanse of EC on red oak, which is what my rail and newels are. I don't think I'd try it on the pine risers. Maybe I should either leave them Honey, or paint them the wall color if paint won't be constant maintenance. I'd like to leave the treads golden oak to tie in with my DR furniture - I think that looks good with the cherry floor. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c113/mom2reese2/dining5.jpg I'm still looking for 6" pieces of rail that were left over - can't find them in burn barrel in yard or trash box in basement, so maybe cousin took them (? for what?) or DH threw them in regular trash (gone already). I wanted to try the stain on the same pieces of railing rather than some other scraps of oak I have to make sure the color was accurate. But if I can't find them I'll take some pieces of crown we have left so you can see the color and maybe capture it. Can't do anything about risers since I only have white pine scraps, no yellow pine in house except for the stairs. I can't believe you got those chairs for $20 each! I took my mom last week to town an hour away to see a pair of green ones that were $150, but they had been snagged a bit by dog's nails and cushions weren't comfy. Hers are OK structurally, one cushion could be replaced, but they *really* need to be reuphostered (dirty, worn, 20 yr old cigarette burn in one seat cover) and she's afraid it would cost too much. Of course, now she's talking about going to Macy's to buy a pair - I can see *that* costing $1000 the pair! I guess I could find fabric at Walmart and try to do it, but welting on arms and backs seems too hard. My aunt could easily make new cushions for seats....See MoreRefinishing floors. What to do about Newel Post?
Comments (10)jpmom - My door, on the inside, is white. On the outside, it's navy blue. My front door is now out in the vestibule that I built...it's no longer right in front of the stairs.Still, I don't think you'd need to paint your mahogany door. The reason my spindles and newel posts were painted is because the refinisher tried to stain them, but they didn't stain like the treads and floors. They looked much darker, but not in a good way. Old wood! My floors were in bad shape, not as nice as yours. I paid $2.50/sf for refinishing, including sanding them to what looked like brand new floors. I went with walnut stain because the previous owner that lived there for 30 years had animals that had soiled the wood. We replaced a few pieces, but to get a good look throughout, I chose walnut (what I had in previous house). I have no wall-to-wall carpet anywhere. Even the upstairs bedrooms are hardwood....See Morewhat to do with oak stair rails and newel posts
Comments (10)no. if you prefer, use a shellac. but I'd prefer the gray primer only because your black paint will go on better and have better adhesion. (you can tint the primer to any color. just have them add some black to it) Or, use the spray primer. it's a lot easier but you will have to tape off everything w/plastic and wear a mask. Always remember after any primer or shellac, you must fine sand w/a 220 or 320 sandpaper. then take a damp rag and wipe everything down very well. use an air hose to blow off any corners if you have to. Now you can paint....See Morecpartist
