Help something’s gotta change here. Exterior house woes
my partner and I are buying this house. We are doing so because of the location, NOT the exterior. We have to find a way to try to fix this but I’m terrible at visualizing. I know it’s not going to end up beautiful but there’s got to be some options.
The roof was done 2 years ago so we really can’t change anything there. Our spending needs to be smart... but the wood paneling needs attention so could get repainted.
My my thoughts were a light blue or light green and then add as much white trim as possible. Could that help? Anything to help the windows?

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoWhat in the world is going on with your entry? Is this a Raised Ranch with a mansard roof? Your door is placed half way between the first floor and the second. That is very unusual.
I think something has be to done to improve on the proportions of the roof, see third picture below where they added something to lengthen the roof visually.
I don't see how you can add a pastel color with the rustic roof and expect it to work.
These are more typical mansard roof homes where the proportions are 1/2 and 1/2 or 1/3 2/3's

Comments (23)Is your baby wearing clothes or just a diaper? Skin red with rash? Hope you aren't using Tide as that can cause discomfort as can most clothes soaps. If baby can't sleep with just diaper, you might try ice cubes in a pan under crib, that would cool area a little. I happen to have problems with AC so when it's over 110 I can get miserable .I have lots of ice tea(decaf) loaded with ice, very light clothing & loose, ice in washcloth to wipe over my arms & legs. I did install a window type AC in wall in case I was so hot I was about to black out. Haven't used it yet. Can't have fans. Do have heavy security screen doors(not really screen but steel with holes in it) open doors early & close as soon as warms. My house is fully insulated walls(used car lights while they were building it & stapled it in) guy checked attic in a suit- I said get back up there & walk around as I was up & looked earlier so they added more & I later added lot more myself. To cool things further I bought 20 ft long shade cloth & attached to edge of patio cover & poles that are removable sunk in concrete makes things much easier walking over to pick tomatoes or peppers etc. Cut down water bill too which is good as on restrictions. Can get vinyl outside shades but they break up in wind so you can cut shade cloth to put over window. Good Luck! If baby feels hot & is fussy, good time to give bath right before bed with lukewarm water. Comments (41)Don't leap into building just because you want to be in a larger place before the in-laws land on you for 6 months. You won't be done by then even if you started now with that. Figure out a way to deal with them in your current house while you get a well-designed house plan for the future. And like everyone else, I think that kitchen plan is a disaster - it's got all the traffic from every part of the house going right through the work area, behind the person using the knives and carrying hot pots. Whoever drew that design should be required to cook dinner in there - spaghetti dinner for 8 so they can haul a huge pot of boiling spaghetti and water from range to sink while dodging the island - while someone else is coming in from the beach with loads of wet towels that need washing, and someone else is trying to store the load of groceries. Draw the colored lines for daily activities with EVERY PLAN you look at - people have a hard time looking at plans for liveability, but they can draw lines from where they get up to where they get dressed (which makes me ask, why do you want the closet in the bathroom with all the steam?) to where they get coffee ... Draw in the daily activities for everyone, and for various ages with children and their visitors. What does the route look like for kids coming in from playing to get a snack or a drink? What is the 'dirty route' for muddy toddlers and teens? Can you get them cleaned up before they hit the rug in the living room?...See More- PRO

4 years agoSecond empire! wow. to me, this looks more like a foursquare that was remuddled by somebody who loved mansard roofs. Still, lighter will definitely be an improvement.
All that and a shiny new lantern next to the door (larger and more interesting). Door could be many colors -- sage, cranberry, aqua, black, whatever you like with this approach.
Be sure that it's currently painted, not stained, before you start adding a layer...

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoRemove that rustic rail fencing in front and on the side. I don't think the house would look quite so quirky if you painted it white. A white house with a brown roof wouldn't stand out as so odd. Paint the garage door and trim white too so nothing jumps out except the roof. All the different colors just look like a mad attempt to pull the attention away from the roof, and serves no real purpose because it isn't doing the job. Put the focus on the entry by adding a wider porch and steps, and paint the door in a blue that works better with the brown.

I like the darker tones for your wood, similar to the rendition by BeverlyFLAdeziner, but would go a true gray with the color. Like this color scheme. Your roof is the warm wood tones. The garage door should be the same gray as the siding. The front door could be white or black.I did a rendition of a simpler landscaping. The rustic-looking beams are not in keeping with your house style, and are distracting. I don't think you need that front bed at all, and the beds beside the house need larger shrubs.
