What kind of wood, and how large of a newel post do we need?

After our new hardwood floors are installed in August, we are wanting to install a new stair rail, spindles, newel post and handrails. Our new wood floors will be white oak with a dark walnut finish.

Here are my questions:

How big should our new newel post be (as far as measurement)? I want it to be square, not round like we have. I want to be able to order this from Menards or Home Depot and not get really crazy with the money.

What kind of wood do we use?

What kind of wood do we use for the hand rail? We want to start all over and not salvage what we have.

Our hardwood floor installer is leaving stain for this project so that it will be the same color as our new floor.

I already have my wrought iron spindles picked out.

Thanks for your help!
