Trump to direct Commerce Dept. to find other way to count citizens

President Donald Trump is expected to announce Thursday that he is backing off his effort to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census and will instead direct the Commerce Department to acquire the data by other means, an administration source told NBC News.

“It should come as no surprise to anybody the president wants to know who’s in this country legally and lawfully, and he’s going to do everything within his legal authority to make sure that information is known because the American people have a right to know,” another official said.

Determining how many American citizens there are is one thing.......where they live something else altogether. Weeks ago I said he could find out the numbers of American citizens fairly easily, didn't need to use the census for that.

What he really wanted was information to do redistricting.......he said so himself. Sounds like another cave being dressed up as an "I'll show you"

Let's hope he continues to use the people who came up with the contrived reason for adding a citizenship question to the census for this effort too!

"What he really wanted was information to do redistricting.......he said so himself."

Yep, and that's why his buddy-buddy Supreme Court said no.

Guess he's worried he can't win legitimately, even with Russia's help.

Very interesting. Trump will issue an EO to collect data to collect for an accurate census of citizen, non-citizens and illegal aliens.

So this was Barr's pathway. It is eminently reasonable to want to know citizenship.

SCOTUS agrees bottom line and it would survive legal review. But that of course would be challenged. Litigation has been and will be used to eat up the clock to eliminate the question from the question.

"Rank speculation" that Trump would issue an EO to put the question on the census.

Spot on, Barr.

Glad it was interesting as I suspect this is the last we'll hear about it. Trump lost bigly and today's dog and pony show was solely for the base wirh the hope they won't notice that Trump failed to deliver.

Lol... So today Trump invented the ACS... Not only that, he is so amazing that he actually had them start doing it 14 years ago!

An actual accurate count of citizens isn't that hard. We just need to hire about 4.8 million people to do it, provide every one of them with a smart phone and send them door to door. It really shouldn't cost any more than double the DHS budget. Other than that, you are just using mathematical modeling, a.k.a. what we do now...

Before this thread goes any further YOU need to THINK. In searching for people who are not citizens every single person in this country will have to be examined. It is not just as simple as some think it is to find non-citizens without also looking at everyone of us to see if we are citizens.

Wut? They're not searching for anyone. They are going to collect data.

Carro in order to collect data they have to look at a source for data. Where do you think they will find that data unless they look at everyone? Do a sampling and decide since one in ten were one thing and the rest were another?

Trump's goal is to count illegals and what with the haters assuring us that illegals wouldn't answer, he's now going to get a more accurate count.

Win.

They aren’t collecting new data. They have no mechanism to do that and trump has seen to it that they have no money nor time to do it. The idiot in chief says he will direct them to use what already resides in government records.

“...[he] is instead issuing an executive order directing departments and agencies to better share data related to the number of citizens and noncitizens in the country....”

dumb cluck that he is

I am so looking forward to every federal agency sharing all that info they have in their various databases. Seriously. No sarcasm.

Then someone in the WH will have to make sense of all those files. Waiting to hear what the actual priority it gets.

Sure is a whole lot of winning.

Also hilarious to see who is stoked about this solution.

questions so congressional districts could be drawn that favored white

The Supreme Court ruled that we must provide more explanation that would have produced even more litigation and considerable time delays... these delays would have prevented us from completing the census on time, it's deeply regrettable, but will not stop us...

We are pursuing a new option to ensure a complete and timely count of the non-citizen population. Today I will be issuing an executive order to put this plan into effect immediately. I am hereby ordering every department and agency in the federal government to provide the department of commerce with all requested records regarding the number of citizens and non-citizens in our country. They must furnish all legally accessible records in their possession, immediately... We will leave no stone unturned...

The Census Bureau projected that using previously available records, it could determine the citizenship status of 90% of our population or more. With today's executive order which eliminates long standing obstacles to data sharing, we're aiming to count everyone. This will allow us to have an even more complete count of citizens than asking the single question alone...

The Census Bureau can use this information along with information collected through the questionnaire to create the official census. In other words, as a result of today's executive order, we'll be able to ensure the 2020 Census generates an accurate count of how many citizens, non-citizens, and illegal aliens are in the United State of America...

With today's order we will collect all of the information to conduct an accurate census and make responsible decisions about public policy, voting rights and representation in Congress

The problem is that any new (federal court) decision would be subject to immediate challenge as a new claim in the 3 ongoing district court cases. In addition there are injunctions currently in place that forbid adding the question. There is simply no way to litigate these issues and obtain relief from the current injunctions in time to implement any new decision without jeopardizing our ability to carry out the census. Which we're not going to do... So as a practical matter, the Supreme Court's decision closed all paths to adding the question to the 2020 census.

The course the President has chosen today will bring unprecedented resources to bare on determining how many citizens and non-citizens are in our country. And will yield the best data the government has had on citizenship in many decades. That information will be used for countless purposes...

There is a current dispute over whether illegal aliens can be included for apportionment purposes. Depending on the resolution of that dispute, this data may be relevant to those considerations. We will be studying this issue.

The Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security,
at Ross's direction, had already entered into agreements with the Census
Bureau to provide the bureau with information on noncitizens.”

...and only population counts from the decennial census can be used to determine each state’s representation. He spent a lot of money getting back to the beginning. It’s the republican version of a canon perpetuus (think row row row your boat).

Never forget patriots, Trump dishonestly and dishonorably evaded the Draft to avoid military service in Vietnam, , his father Fred Trump avoided serving in WW II, but he did march with a white hood on and got busted at a Ku Klux Klan rally.

Now Trump wants to shut the door that was open for his family, open for his latest wife, and open for so many that make America great right now.

Nobody has explained yet why the numbers of citizens are important. All I hear is that you need the number of illegals.....OK so tell me how knowing the numbers of citizens tells you the numbers of illegals.....I'll wait.

We count our citizens and we also ask those who are not citizens what country they are a citizen of. There is nothing that even hints of legal status. The information is used for all sorts of analysis. That could be done in the States too if the government would only provide a decent rationale. Why can't they......because their reason is political. Redistricting plain and simple..and they lied about it..and they got caught.

Imagine you're a liberal Democrat. The last thing you want is for American citizens to know how many illegal alien criminals have been protected by your Party and their sanctuary cities. Good to know the facts will be exposed to all of us, and before the next Presidential Election. Democrats, we won't forget, raised their hands when asked if they support free health are for illegal aliens. Sadly for law abiding Americans, there's no such worship of American citizens. Help for illegal aliens is the priority. Help for Americans is not. Putting illegal aliens first is what Democrats are already running on.

Wanna bet?

You guys are not fooling anyone, other than possibly yourselves, but even you all can't maintain that forever. The last census cost about $41 per capita. Adding an accurate count, which you all swore we needed a few days ago, would ADD at least $320 per capita (this assumes people will not lie in interviews).

At the current high estimate of undocumented immigrants it would cost at least $8,000 per undocumented immigrant. This is the problem with accurate counts when there are motivations for respondents to lie. It isn't that there is trouble getting accurate numbers it is that the cost is so high it does more harm than good.
