Al Gore blasts Trump environmental speech: excludes climate change

dublinbay z6 (KS)

Did Trump honestly think environmentalists wouldn't notice the omission? or think that approach would win "environmentalists" to his position? or what?

--------------------------------

"Former Vice President Al Gore denounced the “misleading false claims” in a speech on the environment by President Trump Monday that failed to mention climate change.

Touting U.S. exports of natural gas, Trump portrayed the energy source as “clean,” which drew a quick rebuke from Gore on Twitter.

------------

Al Gore✔@algore

In his speech today, the President erroneously pointed to natural gas as a clean energy solution. Fracking is a losing game – it produces a dangerous carbon fuel that’s worsening the climate crisis.

------------

Natural gas is “clean” in the sense that unlike coal it does not pollute the air with soot or sulfur dioxide. But it is a potent greenhouse gas itself, and burning it, like burning coal, produces carbon dioxide. Trump consistently conflates the two forms of pollution.

“Partly due to pervasive leaks, natural gas is just as bad as coal, heating up our planet and polluting our communities,” Gore, a leading voice in the fight against climate change, continued. “Anything less than urgent support for clean energy solutions and the jobs they create is grossly irresponsible and a failure of leadership.”

[. . .]

The closest Trump came to an acknowledgement of the view held by the overwhelming majority of scientists — that global carbon emissions threaten the very existence of life on earth — was in the form of self-congratulation.

“Since 2000, our nation’s energy-related carbon emissions have declined more than any other country on earth. Think of that. Emissions are projected to drop in 2019 and 2020,” Trump said.

Trump didn’t mention that the decline in carbon emissions largely coincided with the economic recession, and that in 2018, CO2 emissions in America rose by an alarming 3.4 percent.

Indeed, Trump’s speech came on a day that record rainfall in the nation’s capital flooded roads, spilled into the White House basement and knocked out power to the National Archives.

“American voters aren’t fooled by the President’s attempts to cover up his failed environmental record. Millions are suffering from devastating heat waves, flooded agricultural lands, 60 large wildfires across nearly a dozen states, and more impacts of the climate crisis,” Gore tweeted, adding, “President Trump is refusing to see reality.”

Thank goodness we still have informed and conscientious voices still speaking up in defense of the environment.

Thank you, Al, and all other environmental activists including NRDC and Sierra Club in particular. trumpy has grand kids as many of us do. (He may not remember that.) Let's not leave them a ruined planet.

and all those scientists being routed to Kansas, thereby decimating the scientific staff by 75-80% at the very least. Who needs science, or scientists? Just put your fingers in your ears....lalalalalalalala

Everything is a farce in this administration. The evil being done will live on long after Trump is gone. Actions have consequences, which is just another truth that Trump has never learned.

Seriously? Not only is the US responsible for about 1/3 of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere to date, emissions are UP under the Trump administration as he suppresses the science, reverses any modest progress made by the Obama administration, and does the bidding of the fossil fuel industry donors.

Trump is full of cr@p about climate change as usual and his lies will become quite obvious over time. In a few years the only ones left denying it will be the the hard-core deniers whose brains have petrified and the religious loony tunes who think Jesus is coming back to rescue them.

Hey Ingrid, the profits that corporations are putting into the pockets of their executives, shareholders, and cronies are not a farce! Enjoy 'em while they last.

We have to understand that global warming has already destroyed the earth several times in the last 20 years. All of the predictions came true. The alarmists were right all along. Ouch. 20 years of propaganda and exposed pseudoscience and they still believe.

What on earth are you babbling about? 20 years isn't even long enough to establish a climate trend (30 years is the minimum) so no reputable source would say anything of the kind.

Humans are by nature prone to delusion and denial. But the natural laws and properties of physics and chemistry don't care about human nature, what Donald Trump says, or the stupid memes pumped out by fossil fuel industry-funded propaganda.

Zing...Right over her head.

Humans are by nature prone to delusion and denial.

I know. AGW didn't happen so now you are all screaming about climate change...Which is what the "science deniers" said all along. If you're pushing climate change now, you would have been a global warming science denier 20 years ago.
