Comments (48)$4+/sq. ft. for high-end, says the lighting consultant. A Vegas-style entry hall crystal chandelier is de rigeur on higher-end homes in our metropolitan area. Figure C$5K-C$50K for that alone. **** Fortunately, when custom building, the pricing was easy as I just charged per potlight. Customers picked their own fixtures and were charged for installation only. When I spec built, I needed to be distinctive, but budget-minded. Especially, as I found that buyers often changed out my choices. All that careful shopping for naught! Some great sources in this thread!...See MoreBudgeting for lighting
Comments (2)What I budgeted was extremely different from what I ended up with:) I budgeted 3000 just for the dining fixture, lol. Then I realized pretty fast that's gonna happen in my dreams. Now when we're done with all the hardwired fixtures-I can say altogether cost was roughly around these 3000 I budgeted for one. We did have some lights outside which I loved, so not counting these two..also recessed lights-were part of the general quote so it's hard to say for me right now. I'm talking just about hardwired fixtures, not lamps or torchieres. So it goes: Entry(1 light), family(central light, 1 sconce), dining (1), bathrooms (4 light altogether), guest room(1) kid's room(1), master(2 sconces and a pendant), and another kid's room with a centered skylight where I will do with plug in or lamps so nothing there yet. Also 2 new lights for outside..plan on one more but this one is not a new job, just needs to be switched-no rush. With all the others we had to rush-general remodel, inspections, all that. They want to see everything installed at once. Now all of them but four were vintage-huge savings. Maybe hundreds. Maybe thousands(would be cool to think thousands)). But if you decide to go this path-beware of small details(European fixtures that might need parts not easily sold around here, canopies that are too small for the big boxes they tend to install now, etc). Nerve-racking, really, this whole experience was. In the end, I'm pleased, having great quality lights which I love. Different countries, different periods, but all work together hopefully, and I love them all. But time and energy that went into that..I'm partially proud of myself, partially feel myself mighty stupid. I also have couple fixtures that I bought but haven't used(still working on these parts etc)).. The house: around 1900 sq f, 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bath. And: depends on your tastes and sensibilities of course. Somehow, I never bought lights before in my life(I'm not counting table lamps etc)..and then I started looking at them knowing I have to get some..and then you stumble upon some great things..and then you realize you can't have them..but you still want them. And you ask yourself, like, "Why should I pay so much for something that doesn't even impress me? I'd rather pay less for something that I like" That's how I stepped on this slippery slope of vintage..:)...See Morelighting budget
Comments (31)My mother would say "its easy to spend money on nice things, more work to make it look nice and stick to the budget" Jeffrey's mother is correct : ) . Light fixtures, stone counters, tile... all very sexy and hard to resist sometimes. Jeffrey and his mother are right again lol. erica, it might help to decide if any of your light fixtures are going to be a "star" in a room or just supporting players. If you're going for all supporting players, it's much easier to stick to your budget. Light fixtures as "stars" will generally be more expensive, but this is manageable if go for a high-low mix, especially if you go for more low and fewer high $$ items. For our house, the overarching idea, since we live in the country, was to bring the outdoors in. Our dining room has windows on three sides and is surrounded by trees; we also have a round sitting room off the living room with six windows, also surrounded by trees. I found wrought iron fixtures that look like branches at Currey & Company that really make each room and carry through our idea for the house, so that was an easy place to decide to splurge. The pantry and laundry room have enamelled metal "factory" pendants (Trans Globe/Bel Air's Sherman pendant), which are perfect for the room and cost about $30-35 each, though these pendants have their fans too, especially with the younger "modern farmhouse" set : ) ....See MoreLampsusa
